Trump faces political test in Ohio as five states cast votes

(Reuters) - President Donald Trump faces a test of his political influence on Tuesday in a special congressional election in Ohio that has become a referendum on his leadership and a last chance to gauge Democratic strength ahead of November’s midterm elections.

The Ohio race for a U.S. House of Representatives seat headlines a day of voting across the country that also features primaries in four other states. Other key contests include a Democratic battle for governor in Michigan between a progressive and a mainstream candidate and a high-profile conservative challenge to the incumbent Republican governor in Kansas.

Trump charged into the Ohio race, the final special election before November. He visited the reliably Republican 12th Congressional District over the weekend to try to head off an upset after polls showed a tightening battle between Republican Troy Balderson and Democrat Danny O’Connor.

Voted this morning and there seemed to be a very strong turnout in this very conservative precinct.

If I were a betting woman, I'd bet that Balderson will take this.

(I'm pretty sure Trump's influence won't help or hurt him.  O'Connor is a flaming liberal).

I think a big turnout is to O'Connor benefit. The rats are highly motivated, thus they are turning out to vote. GOP Congress has not given it's marginal voters a reason to vote. Quite the opposite.

In this precinct, big turnout always favors Republicans. 

We don't have that many Rats in my neighborhood.  It's around 70% Republican.

Our county traditionally goes for the Republican presidential candidate by 60% or so, but our precinct is even more Republican than that.

Nary a sign in the area for a Dem candidate............. cept a couple for Obama back in 2008, probably because of the novelty of his candidacy.

At any rate, my original point that a heavy turnout in our precinct bodes well for the Republican holds.

We shall see............

   This seat has been +7~10% GOP for 30 years.

This is a special election.  Normally, Republicans show up more than Democrats. A Democrat hasn't won this district in 30 years.  If the Democrat stays at the high numbers in regard to the Rep., even if the Democrat loses, this hasn't been seen in those 30 years.  This means more Democrats will show up in November than has ever shown up there.  I fear this may also be going to happen in Texas in November.

99% of the votes in, Balderson is up 50.1 to 49.3.

My guess is that the 7 precincts not reporting yet are rural.

That means we got this in a squeaker.

This is a conservative area.  It should NEVER have been this close.

Glad to see my earlier post proven wrong.
But this was too close, for what was supposed to be a "solidly Republican" district.

Red-state Pubbies had better take this as a harbinger of things to come, if they don't "get things done"...

This is a special election to fill an unexpired term.  Low turnout is typical.

   Though the State Threshold for a recount is .05% you know the Dem lawyers will be arguing for such tomorrow, for a seat that will be occupied for 4 months.

How GD pointless these waste of money special elections are. First off it is the middle of summer when most normal people are going on vacation or having fun. Not getting involved, standing in line and casting ballots. We have a fricken election coming up in a couple months. Like this district can't wait like it already has to get someone installed?

Bottom line, these special elections are getting out of hand and are a waste of money.

Troy Balderson leads by 0.9 percentage points, or 1,766 votes, over Danny O’Connor with 100 percent of precincts fully reporting.
