Reforming NATO Is the Only Way to Save It

It’s long past time for the alliance to reckon with its own weaknesses.

Donald Trump recently ignited yet another firestorm by hedging when asked whether protecting the newest NATO member, tiny Montenegro, might be worth risking a war.

Of course, the keystone of NATO was always the idea that all members, strong and weak, are in theory equal. A military attack against one member, under Article V of the NATO charter, meant an attack on all members.

Such mutual defense is the essence of collective deterrence. An aggressor backs off when he realizes his intended target has lots of powerful friends willing to defend it.

But what happens when an alliance becomes so large and so diverse that not all of its members still share similar traditions, values, agendas, or national-security threats?

Good article.

Being an outsider, Trump actually has the ability to look at the alliance as it is, rather than through the lens of people who just assume it as a give for the last 65 years.

There is simply no justification for the US to bear 69-70% of the costs.

Trump is merely following through, on yet another item that he campaigned on.

NATO's European members need the US, far more than the US needs them or NATO.

They have in effect, enjoyed a subsidy (in kind and/or in money) from the US since NATO's inception.

The simple fact is that the entity NATO was formed to defend against no longer exists.
"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

Most of what he does is picking up the cans that have been kicked down the road for far too long. NATO, immigration, tariffs, tax cuts, revitalizing a military depleted by endless wars...

Title:
"Reforming NATO Is the Only Way to Save It"

Questions (and I'm serious):
Is NATO worth saving?
Why?
What do we need it for, these days?
