Israel shot down a Syrian Sukhoi fighter jet Tuesday that infiltrated its airspace, the Israeli military announced.

The jet entered about 1.2 miles into Israeli airspace before it was hit by a pair of Patriot missiles, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

It's the first downing of a Syrian jet since a U.S. Navy F-18 Super Hornet shot one down over Syria in June 2017 after the Syrian plane fired on U.S.-backed Syrian forces.

Unclear if it’s the SU-22 (bottom) or the SU-24, but they’re both attack aircraft.

In either case, the Patriot system worked.

So were 72 virgins included in the price of this suicide mission?

I display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my great great great grandfathers who spilled blood at Wilson's Creek and Shiloh.  5 others served in the WBTS with honor too.

Apparently not. Both pilots elected over Syrian territory.

It’s very good, especially if it’s the PAC-3 model.  The Israelis do a lot of useful combat testing for our hardware.  Those old Soviet planes don’t have the jamming pods and countermeasures to deal with a modern air defense system.

  • All deserve a trial if accused
Syria knows, any such plane will be shot down. One really wonders what their aim was. It's practically a suicide mission.

"Israel said that it tracked the plane from the time it took off from the T-4 airbase and traveled “at high speed” towards the Golan."

This also seems to make one wonder as to how Russia can enforce any agreement for Iranian forces to stay away from that border when they can't even control where the Syrians fly their planes.

The Jerusalem Post learned the pilot was Colonel Umran Mare of Tartous. He was flying a two-seater Suhkoi 22 jet. The second pilot is believed to have bailed out of the aircraft and is still missing.

That would make it a SU-24. SU-22 only has one pilot.

That would make it a SU-24. SU-22 only has one pilot.

When the improved Su-17UM3 two-seater was introduced, an export version with the R29BS-300 engine was built as the "Su-22UM3". Only 9 were delivered because the AL-21F-3 engine was finally released for export, and so export production moved on to the "Su-22UM3K", which was almost identical to the Su-17UM3. 41 were built. The Su-22UM3 and Su-22UM3K both retained the NATO reporting name of "Fitter-G".

There were eventually 335 two-seaters produced.
