Tony Perkins: Are Children the New Get-Out-of-Jail-Free Card?

Now that President Trump has scored big points for his historic meeting with Kim Jong Un, his opponents are desperate to change the subject. Anxious to turn the country's attention away from the administration's diplomatic success, they've returned to an issue that the Congress has repeatedly failed to resolve – immigration.

Yesterday's Washington Post got the ball rolling with an inside look [1] at one of the 100 shelters where children, whose parents were arrested for entering America illegally, are housed. The article couldn't help but tug on heartstrings, since almost 1,500 boys are living in a warehouse-sized summer camp, separated from their parents when they crossed the border illegally. What was once a Walmart super center is now full of classrooms, medical rooms, basketball courts, and even a pool hall. Juan Sanchez, who manages the nonprofit that's housing the kids, says that the circumstances are difficult, especially for kids struggling to adapt, but promises, “We're trying to do the best that we can taking care of these children. Our goal ultimately is to reunite kids with their families,” he said. “We're not a detention center ... What we operate are shelters that take care of kids. It's a big, big difference.”

So, if the adults are arrested for illegal entry, why aren't the children arrested, too? It's just as illegal for a minor to cross the border as it is for an adult.

Arrest and deport them together. Problem solved.

That makes some sense in cases involving children who make their way to and cross the border illegally without their families, as quite a number actually do, and not just those originating from Mexico, with quite a number of those aware enough that they are doing it illegally.

But those who are brought by and with their families with no say in that movement (one ponders whether those elders told their children, in effect, "Hey, we're moving to America and we're doing it illegally!"), or those who are used as human shields, so to say (and there are more such children than people think), by adults having no legitimate family relation to them but using them to cross the border for assorted nefarious purposes (smugglers? human traffickers? drug cartel people?), shouldn't be treated as criminals themselves. They are victims of their elders' crimes, too.

Wherever the children are, it sure is a hell of a lot better than the shithole country they came from.

Fake news on Thuh Chillen.  I get an e-mail every day from the Dallas Morning News, a totally despicable rag in a conservative area, which I subscribed to all my life until I left Dallas.

This morning they were all out on this issue.  The e-mail just gives you the headline and I never click on it because they want money.  But here's this morning's lovely links:

Fact check: There is no law that requires family separation at the border, despite  the Trump administration's claims.

Meanwhile: Immigrants shared their stories and love for America during an awards dinner in Dallas.

Also: A Texas lawmaker wants Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to cancel National Guard border deployments until federal authorities stop separating families.

Against stupidity, the Gods themselves contend in vain.

Why not modify the policy, to wit:

When one or both parents cross the border illegally with their children, they should be offered the choice:
Option 1: "separation", insofar as it the current policy mandates
or
Option 2: They can remain with their children, but only by returning to the other side of the border (or if not Mexican, their country of origin) immediately. If they agree, all records of their having crossed illegally [for this attempt] will be expunged from the record, and they will then be able to apply for legal admittance through the American embassy in their country of origin.

If they choose option 2, and they are not from Mexico, they will be provided return transportation free back to their country of origin...
