Tapper on North Korea summit: 'It's not as if other presidents couldn't have done this, it's that they didn't want to'
By Joe Concha - 06/12/18 09:36 AM EDT

CNN's Jake Tapper on Tuesday weighed in on the Trump-Kim summit arguing that other presidents did not meet with North Korean leaders to avoid giving their dictatorships “prestige.”

“It's not as if other presidents couldn't have done this,” Tapper said of Trump's historic meeting with the North Korean leader. “It's that they didn't want to.”

Tapper, the host of CNN shows “The Lead” and “State of the Union,” prefaced his comments that past presidents decided not to meet for direct talks with North Korea because “the concern was, you don't want to give North Korea that kind of prestige.”

“You don't want to elevate them without having something guaranteed in terms of what they are actually willing to do, in terms of denuclearization, in terms of what Secretary of State Pompeo constantly refers to as ‘irreversible and verifiable denuclearization.’ ”

And, they didn't make any progress in halting NK's development of nuclear power.  Which is very, very negligent.

Again, another Washingtonian far too concerned about "optics".  Who cares if Kim gets a meeting with the President and brags about it?  What actually impact does that have on anything?

Yet Iran was "brilliant" diplomacy...

Not only not "brilliant" diplomacy, also not "‘irreversible and verifiable denuclearization".  Quite the opposite, in reality.  But then, the Iran deal was made by one of those "other presidents" that shall never be criticized or critiqued for his special version of "diplomacy".... much less imprisoned for his treasonous activities against the United States of America.

They didn’t want to give Kim any gravitas doncha know.

All of this rationalization from people who cannot admit they may have been at least a little bit wrong about the current president grows tiresome.

If anyone pretends to know how all of this is going to come out, they're full of it.

The only thing we’re relatively sure of is where it was all headed if we kept doing the same thing.

Exactly.  As much as I support Trump, I have some misgivings about this,  but I'm willing to sit back and see what happens.

Trump is making fools of our "elites" both in politics and the media.

they bashed him when he set up the meeting
then they bashed him when he cancelled the meeting
next they bashed him for going to the meeting.
it doesn't matter one iota what he does, "they" are going to bash him. LOL fools.

And as much as I dislike Trump, I’m willing to sit back and see if he can get anything out of NK as well.

It’s entirely possible that all NK needed was a little ceremonial butt-kissing via a one-on-one with a sitting US president.  And maybe not.  We shall see.

What I object to are the hosannas and done-deal crowd who seem to think that this meeting did anything other than give NK the rhetorical flourishes it wanted.

One thing to watch is how this plays out internally in NK.  The fact that Kim got something out of the US that neither his father or grandfather could get should strengthen his hand in internal politics, which may bode well or ill.  Let’s see who “mysteriously” dies or gets arrested and executed in the next few weeks.

Bingo.  They fiddled while Rome burned,  and still virtue-signal that at least they didn't give the NORKs' "prestige".  Yeah, they gave 'em nukes instead.   *****rollingeyes*****

Now the NORKs have their nukes, and the means to deliver them to an American city.  It was left to Trump to deal with that reality,  and I for one applaud his courage to risk a little "prestige" to try to solve a problem rather than kick a can.
