A Texas man is recovering after he claims the head of a rattlesnake bit him — moments after he had just cut it off.

Jennifer Sutcliffe's husband was reportedly bitten by the beheaded snake on May 27 at his home near Lake Corpus Christi.

Sutcliffe told KIII-TV the two were doing yard work when she came across the four-foot rattlesnake. She said her husband used a shovel to behead the snake, but when he went to dispose of it, it bit him....

We have quite a few too.

One of my hick friends was at Deussen Park next to Lake Houston and he caught a pigmy rattler. He put it in his tool box. And he just had to show people what he had caught. Yep, he got bit. He freaked out and was running around as he was drunker'n Cooter Brown. When the ambulance arrived he was so excited they grabbed him and lashed him down to the gurney. Well when he got to the hospital they made the mistake of unlashing him. Well he was a wild man again and the hospital decided not to take him. So the paramedics lashed him down again and drove him clear across town to Ben Taub. He was lucky to pull through. He was in the hospital for a month.

I saw that story!  Caught the coral snake so he could give it to his brother.  Apparently he didn't know that "red on yellow kill a fellow" stuff.  It's hard to get bit by a coral snake.

Ah, I'm glad you specified the location.  It reminded me of one of our ambulance patients.

It's weird. Here, while we are close to where rattlers are, there are no poisonous snakes. yet still it is customary when killing a snake, to lop off the head and bury it. It must be some kind of collective memory sort of thing.  :shrug:
