I always did love that song by The Supremes - Where did our Love Go. Funny how their song "Baby Love" sounded almost exactly like it.

Thanks for sharing a good memory.

My pleasure, @Sighlass! Birthday boy Lamont Dozier (part of the songwriting team of Holland, Dozier & Holland) wrote many of the Supremes big hits...

@Sighlass
In those years, Motown chieftain Berry Gordy, Jr. often encouraged his writing/production teams to try following up a huge hit with things that were only too similar to the biggies. It worked for the Supremes and the Four Tops ("I Can't Help Myself," "It's the Same Old Song") largely because the Holland-Dozier-Holland team who worked with both, primarily, were pretty good at making near-copies of hits they'd just written and produced. On the other hand, Smokey Robinson tried that tack with the Temptations---he'd given them "The Way You Do the Things You Do," which was a chartbuster (the Temptations' first such), and followed up with the similar-sounding "I'll Be in Trouble" and "The Girl's All Right With Me," and both of them flopped by comparison. He did the same thing after "My Girl," giving them "It's Growing," a charming song otherwise but that guitar lick tried just too hard to be "Son of 'My Girl'."

Booker T. & the MGs were good at that for awhile, too; witness these three singles starting with the one that put them on the map as hitmakers in their own right:

Thanks @EasyAce for the explaination, The 50s/60s were little out of my league to be honest. I was around then, but coming from a really religious family (no TV), grandmother controlled the radio dial (easy listening was all she listened to). The only radio I got was a shortwave radio my uncle brought back from Vietnam that I smuggled and listened to on occasions I could at night.

In the 80s the beloved Laura Branigan had a hit called “Shattered Glass”. It was originally recorded by this Scottish artist "Ellie Warren" in 1980. Ellie Warren released this song "Satellites" in 1985. This is one of the extended versions.

Thanks Tom, think the first song by Kay Kyser was from around 1946 not 1906 (slip of fingers I am sure, Lord knows I do it often enough). Thanks for posting and modding the music subsection.

Tonight I though I would post a little remembered Canadian New Wave song or two from the group called "Strange Advance". This group had a deep sound and good lyrics. It was a definite New Wave sound, making them one of my faves.

First song is from 1983 from the album by the same name.

Thursday, June 21st, 2018 Music Thread... Welcoming All Music...

Another Kinks birthday, Ray Davies....

'You Really Got Me', it's kind of an insult that most classic rock stations play Van Halen's over this, oh, they play 'Lola' I guess....
! No longer available

To me, 'Lola' was a major song because it talked about transvestite-type of stuff, not so much the merits of the rhythm which still is good.

'Waterloo Sunset':

Deep cut, "Rosie Won't You Please Come Home", just what a great song:

A lot of the Punk crowd saw them a bit different than the other '60s era British bands that made it so big, The Jam did 'David Watts', I think Joey Strummer of the Clash stated how he liked the Kinks.

"I'm Not Like Everyone Else":

'Destroyer':
! No longer available

'Daylight", some excellent music as well:

'Autumn Almanac' and so on, a lot of talent, especially in those early years.  Supposedly, the guy tried to kill himself... I don't know, it is said.

Argentine soundtrack artist, Lalo Schifrin, composer of many movie scores such as.... 'Dirty Harry':

'Theme From Mission Impossible':

Bruce Lee's "Enter The Dragon":
! No longer available

OC Smith, "Little Green Apples":

Joseph "Joey" Molland, Badfinger, again.... 'No Matter' (what you say):

Really, I thought it was the Beatles...

Miguel Vicens, Los Bravos, "Black Is Black", signature song:

 Jon Hiseman who replaced Ginger Baker in the Graham Bond Organisation and worked with Colosseum and Jack Bruce.  'Wade In The Water':
! No longer available

Chris Britton of the Troggs, we must have had all 3 in the last 2 months.... Greg Munford, Strawberry Alarm Clock, just had them too....Martin Denny playing "Incense and Peppermint":

Joey Kramer, Aerosmith, "Kings And Queens", saw this covered too by another band...

@TomSea
Sadly, it's true. It happened in 1973, while the Kinks were touring the U.S. Ray Davies was already long haunted by the death of his favourite sister, Rene, who'd given him his first guitar as a 13th birthday present, when she left the same evening to attend a dance at the Lyceum Ballroom and died of a heart attack at 30. (The Davies were a large family.) In 1973, his first marriage collapsed and he feared he would never see his children again. (He'd had a nervous breakdown in 1966, too.) He'd been taking prescribed pills to deal with stress but he admitted eventually that when he collapsed after a concert---during which he unexpectedly kissed brother Dave on the cheek and told the crowd, "‘I just want to say goodbye and thank you for all you’ve done." Everyone in the house including the press thought he meant the Kinks were breaking up. Davies eventually admitted it was a suicide attempt.

Years later, Davies finally wrote a tribute to his beloved sister . . .

The Kinks, "Come Dancing"
