Election 2018: Here's What You Need to Know About the May 8 Primary Elections
Sarah Gray

 î‚…
West Virginia:

West Virginia’s Senate primary may be the most closely watched of the May 8 primaries, and that’s because of former Massey Energy CEO Don Blankenship. After an explosion at Massey’s Upper Big Branch Mine in 2010 killed 29 miners, he spent a year in federal prison after a federal jury convicted him of conspiring to violate mine safety and health standards

Ohio:

The House primary races to watch, according to Vox, are in the 1st, 7th, 10th, 12th, 14th, and 15th Congressional districts that Democrats are trying to flip from Republican control.

Indiana:

Indiana is Vice President Mike Pence’s home state, which Trump won by 19 points in the 2016 general election. Eyeing his margin, the three Republican Senate candidates have clung close to Trump as they try to take out Democratic incumbent Sen. Joe Donnelly. They are Rep. Todd Rokita, Rep Luke Messer, and businessman and former Indiana State Rep. Mike Braun. This primary race has been called the “nation’s nastiest,” according to the Indianapolis Star, and it’s unclear who will win.

North Carolina:

Every 12 years, North Carolina has a Blue Moon election—or an election with no statewide races on the ballot—that translates into lower voter turnout. And 2018 is one of them. The primaries to watch, according to The Hill and Vox, are those deciding the Democratic challengers to incumbent Republican Reps. Richard Hudson, Robert Pittenger, Ted Budd, and George Holding.

I have WV Metro News radio coverage open in another window. Obviously, too early to tell what's going to happen with the Senate race. We voted this morning and had to wait a few minutes. Not a big crowd, but one of the poll workers said turnout was good. FOX apparently is going to call the Republican Senate primary pretty soon, even though no votes have been counted yet.

A KDKA cameraman is busily PMing our local GOP group for an interview. As I'm sitting in my jammies with wet hair and Mr. M is out on the golf course, we'll have to beg off.

FOX is bravely predicting Mojo Manchin will win the Dem primary. Well, duh. It may be hours before we know about the Republican primary.

According to this site, in the very, very early going, Morrisey is leading Jenkins and Blankenship.

The WV Secretary of State also puts Morrisey ahead with just a few votes counted (only about 4 precincts reporting so far).

25% of the vote counted: Morrisey still leading 39-25 percent over Jenkins; Blankenship has 19%.

With 27% of the vote counted in the Dem Senate primary, Manchin is leading some whackjob granola cruncher 67-33%. The radical leftists think he's too conservative; conservatives know he's a sell-out.

Ewww, AG Mike DeWine is scummy ;(.  His handling of the Rhoden murders and all the other messes in southern Ohio are pathetic.

38% of vote counted in W.Va. Republican primary for U.S. Senate

REP REP   PATRICK MORRISEY  37.40%  15,619  - conservative
REP REP   EVAN JENKINS  27.29%  11,398 - former Dem, phony
REP REP   DON BLANKENSHIP  19.21%  8,024 - big mouth coal operator
REP REP   THOMAS (TOM) WILLIS 10.52% 4,395 - good guy, probably should run for something in future
REP REP   BO COPLEY 2.84% 1,185 - don't know anything about him
REP REP   JACK NEWBROUGH 2.73% 1,142 - truck driver, conservative, should have started at a lower level office

Looks like voter turnout is nothing great. What the heck is wrong with people?!?

This is kind of interesting. In the Democrat primary for W.Va.'s first district (currently served by Republican David McKinley), a female law professor is leading a millionaire carpetbagger lawyer.

DEM DEM   KENDRA FERSHEE  64.73% 13,262
DEM DEM   RALPH BAXTER 23.01% 4,715
DEM DEM   TOM PAYNE 12.26% 2,511

Baxter was managing partner at the Orrick, Herrington, Sutcliffe international law firm and "came home" to W.Va. to run for Congress. How's that working out for you, Ralph?

WV bothers me because there are considerably more people turning out to vote in the Dem primary than in the GOP primary.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."     -Ayn Rand-

Need to sign off, but let's hope Morrisey's nearly 10 point lead holds.

PATRICK MORRISEY 37.13% 32,308
EVAN JENKINS 27.54% 23,959
DON BLANKENSHIP 19.11% 16,626
