Sotomayor to undergo shoulder-replacement surgery
The Hill, Apr 30, 2018, Lydia Wheeler

The Supreme Court on Monday announced Justice Sonia Sotomayor will undergo shoulder-replacement surgery.

Sotomayor, 63, injured her shoulder when she fell at her home earlier this month.

The court's public information office said in a press release that "tests revealed she suffered a multipart displaced head splitting fracture of her proximal humerus," and that further consultation with specialists indicated surgery was needed.

The court said she will undergo reverse total shoulder replacement on Tuesday morning and will curtail activities for the next few weeks while she recuperates.

I had a right shoulder problem (in the bursa where the bones move together) a number of years ago.  The surgeon said if the problem didn't get better on its own, he could replace the shoulder, then he told me what could happen when it was done:  Damage could be done to the nerve that goes from the shoulder down the arm and into the hand and one could not use the hand again.  Nerves can't be replaced; once damaged/torn, that is it.

My arm recovered without surgery - I hope she can use her hand when this is over.

I had the same injury from a fall; namely "multipart displaced head splitting fracture" meaning the ball on the end of the upper arm bone, is split into pieces.

I was referred by one specialist in replacements, to another that said he would try a repair, but had on hand the hardware to do the replacement instead, if indicated. He did the repair, which involved a plate and ten screws.

Nearly five years later, I am okay. (For years he checked x-rays quarterly watching for bone loss, which would indicate insufficient blood supply). Range of motion not perfect, but very good. Pain usually not an issue.

I believe I got a good outcome, by having an excellent doctor. A woman at my office, had a similar scenario, but not as good of an outcome.

The entire process was not pleasant at all. Surgery #1 plate screws installed, surgery #2 ten months later for removal of plate & screws. Surgery #3 two weeks after #2 due to hemorrhage. Physical therapy, painful.

Brain-replacement would have been more newsworthy.
Fart for freedom, fart for liberty and fart proudly.  - Benjamin Franklin

...Obsta principiis—Nip the shoots of arbitrary power in the bud, is the only maxim which can ever preserve the liberties of any people. When the people give way, their deceivers, betrayers and destroyers press upon them so fast that there is no resisting afterwards. The nature of the encroachment upon [the] American constitution is such, as to grow every day more and more encroaching. Like a cancer, it eats faster and faster every hour." - John Adams, February 6, 1775

At 63, maybe she should just be given a pill and sent home.

My thoughts precisely.

Sotomayor should go through job replacement surgery.

Mrs. Liberty had one of these, will have the other done as well, eventually.  AVN, same as me.  I wonder if there's bad air in the house or something....

Hard to say if it's worse than a THR.  Seems like a choice between being hit by a bus or by a Semi-truck.
