Ted Cruz praises controversial decision to add citizenship question to 2020 census Sen. Ted Cruz is applauding the Trump administration's controversial decision to include a question about citizenship status in the 2020 U.S. Census, a move the Texan says he requested but that critics say could result in inaccurate data with enormous repercussions.
In a joint statement with GOP Sens. Tom Cotton, of Arkansas, and Jim Inhofe, of Oklahoma, Cruz called the citizenship question a “reasonable, common-sense addition†to the census. The three senators asked the Commerce Department to include it in order to “gather more accurate data on the number of U.S. citizens†living in the country, according to the news release on Tuesday.
“It is imperative that the data gathered in the census is reliable, given the wide-ranging impacts it will have on U.S. policy,†Cruz said.........

San Antonio Rep. Joaquin Castro, a Democrat, said the impact of the decision will have financial and political ramifications in Texas.

The Trump Administration's decision to include a citizenship question in the 2020 census will scare away millions of people in our country from participating, skewing the results and costing Texas billions of dollars in federal funds over the next ten years," he said in a prepared statement.
