Are Your Dogs Part of Your Home-Defense Plan?
« on: March 26, 2018, 09:11:12 pm »
Personal Defense Network by By Evan Carson

If you are reading articles here on the Personal Defense Network, you have probably made some home-defense plans. Have you thought about how your pets play into your home-defense plan in the case of an imminent home invasion?

Your pets should definitely be included in your home-defense plan. While your dogs may not be high-level personal-protection dogs, they can still serve as good deterrents for a would-be intruder. In my case, I have two dogs who are like my kids (who am I kidding, they are my kids) and I love them like my two non-furry daughters, so I have formulated a plan that includes them. Obviously, my main priorities are my two daughters and my wife, and they take precedence over the dogs, but the dogs are still part of our home-defense plan and help dictate some of the tactics I choose to think about and potentially use in an imminent home invasion.

COMPANION OR PROTECTION-TRAINED DOG?

First let me make a distinction. This article is for readers who have dogs that serve as companions, not for folks who train or plan on training a dog to bite for protection. While I think having a protection- or bite-trained dog is a great idea, that group is a much smaller and generally insignificant subset group of the larger group of dog owners in the U.S. It is estimated that over 60 million American households have at least one dog.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Yep. He's there to alert, distract, and die.

Funniest thing I ever seen... My buddy had a big shepherd, friendly as can be. You could walk right in and do anything the heck you want to... He'd happily let you. Until you try to leave. No leaving.

One of mine would most likely piddle on the floor, creating a safety hazard which could theoretically cause the robber to slip and fall and possibly break an ankle.

Good plan.  Who would expect that?

My dogs' priorities are squirrels.   People who come to the door elicit a waggy welcome, and a solicitation for treats.

But, as they have pointed out to me many times,  not once has a squirrel made its way into the house.  They feel they do their jobs, and do them well.

Mine are...to an extent.

I have two Miniature Schnauzers who bark at anything...and I do mean anything...birds in the yard...the doorbell in a commercial on TV...the lady across the street walking her dog.  And it's a loud attention getting bark at that.

So they'll work quite well as a first alert that something is wrong in the house.

I'm sure my five will out bark yours. I have two Rottweiler mixes for the back yard and inside my Chihuahua, Italian Greyhound, and Basenji/JRT alert on anything in the front yard. They get embarrassed if someone gets to the front door before they have notified us.

Only if I am already home.
My Beagle and Foxhound will howl when people come to the door, but they love everybody.
They are a good alarm, but only if I am already there.
If not, they'd make best buddies with the intruders, once they got inside.
Hopefully, the noise alone would deter them from entering, but I couldn't count on that.

We have a big eared Papillion who does not let a mouse crossing the deck go unoticed much less a person trying to enter the house. And he will wake the whole house.  He must think his name is Shut up.
