Half A Million To Send Message At DC March For Our Lives Event

WASHINGTON (CBSMiami/AP) — Organizers of the March For Our Lives event in the nation’s capital are hoping to draw half a million people to rally in support of gun control.

If they do, that will match last year’s women’s march and make this one of the largest Washington protests since the Vietnam era. It would also bolster claims that the nation is ready to enact sweeping changes to its gun control laws. More than 800 other concurrent marches are planned in cities across America and dozens of locations overseas.

“I look at the younger kids and the future generations and I never want them to go through what we went through or see what we saw,” said 15-year old Kayla Renert, a student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where 17 people were killed on February 14th.

Renert, who sheltered in a classroom during the attack and had a friend wounded in the leg, was on a bus bringing her to Washington from the airport after flying up from Florida Friday morning. She pointed out that the Parkland shooting wasn’t even the most recent school shooting in the United States. One student was wounded and another later died from her wounds after being shot Tuesday in southern Maryland; the 17-year old gunman was also killed.

“We keep saying, ‘Oh this is going to be the last time.’ But there’s already been another time,” Renert said.

Many of the protesters spoke pointedly about how their parents and others of their generation had failed to bring about the changes they are demanding. They present the youth-led nature of the current movement as proof that they will succeed where their predecessors had failed.

Before the weekend is over many of these kids will have killed a hundred or more people using the same guns they are protesting at home playing Call of Duty or other such games. If they were really sincere in their fight against guns, they would be making a bond fire out of these games on national TV saying no more. In the same way they would be sending the message to Hollywood that they will never again see a movie that glorifies guns.   Will THEY?  Hell no.

Today we get to see the next generation of socialist 17 year olds telling us we don’t have a clue what we are talking about. They will say this is about stopping school shootings, but this is nothing more than a ploy for banning of all semi-automatic weapons.

Fifty years ago this year, I got my draft notice, signed by a democrat potus. By the time I was inducted, a Republican had been inaugurated potus.

The nation still strongly supported the Vietnam war, and would still 4years later when anti-war McGovern was soundly defeated.

We were far better educated, and our positions on both sides were far better informed, without smartphones and the internet.

Most young men when drafted served as required, including many that opposed the war. Personally I respect those vets very much.

Whether right or wrong, we sent 58000+ to their deaths.

The current generation would probably cry, whine, send instagrams, dye their hair, claim they belonged in the opposite genders' clothing, claim ADD, etc.

This isn't very different than how the adults back in the 60's and 70's felt about the protesters then.  In spite of being "better informed" .... most adults just wanted them to sober up, get a haircut, take a bath and get a job.

The Outline interviewed David Hogg, a 17-year old survivor of the shooting in Parkland, Florida, who says he is the NRA's "worst nightmare." Hogg's interview was laced with profanity against his detractors, Gov. Rick Scott, the NRA, old people and others.

Hogg said he became an activist because adults don't know how to "use a f*cking democracy":

When your old-ass parent is like, ‘I don’t know how to send an iMessage,’ and you’re just like, ‘Give me the f*cking phone and let me handle it.’ Sadly, that’s what we have to do with our government; our parents don’t know how to use a f*cking democracy, so we have to....

It just makes me think what sick f*ckers out there want to continue to sell more guns, murder more children, and honestly just get reelected," Hogg said. "What type of shitty person does that? They could have blood from children splattered all over their faces and they wouldn’t take action, because they all still see these dollar signs."

When you first broke into the public sphere with your gun-grabbing schtick, we were reluctant to oppose you. For one thing, you’re a child. Present tense.
