Must have happened very early, also note, investigation is now being conducted. So, not an active situation?

Great Mills Maryland is about 60 miles from DC per the article.

AS long as our schools remain gun-free zones this is going to continue to happen.  Of course there is going to be a huge push now for banning guns and ammo, especially since this is happening so close to Parkland.

Three injured in shooting at St. Mary's County high school in Maryland
Talia Richman, Jessica Anderson and Colin Campbell
The Baltimore Sun

Three people were injured in a shooting at Great Mills High School in Southern Maryland on Tuesday morning, according to a county spokesman.

No fatalities have been confirmed in the shooting at the school at 21130 Great Mills Road, which happened just before 8 a.m., county spokesman Tony Jones said from the emergency operations center. Two of the victims are students, Jones said. None of the victims’ conditions were [sic] released.

The St. Mary’s County school is on lockdown and students are being evacuated, Jones said. It’s unclear where in the school the shooting happened.   ...

Senior Terrence Rhames was standing with his friends outside their first-period class around 8 a.m. when he heard a shot. He said he knew instantly what the loud crack meant.

He started running, heading to a first-floor bathroom before thinking to himself, “This is a dead end.” He turned to instead sprint toward the nearest exit. Out of the corner of his eye, Rhames said, he saw a girl fall.   ...   Rest of story

The shooter exchanged fire with a school resource officer on campus and was wounded, Cameron said. All three students are in critical condition, but the officer wasn’t injured. It wasn’t yet clear how the gunman was wounded.

Looks like it ended quickly by a non broward coward resource officer.

Students and staff quickly notified an armed school resource officer, who pursued the shooter and fired a single shot at him, Cameron said at a press conference around 11:30 a.m. The shooter fired back.

The shooter and the two students were rushed to local hospitals in critical condition. The shooter, who was not identified, was pronounced dead at 10:41 a.m., Cameron said.

That Scott Peterson guy deserves to have his name and picture  posted a million times.

The (not) funny thing about that:

Some officials wanted Florida school shooting suspect forcibly committed in 2016

Documents show some officials were so concerned about the mental stability of the student accused of last month's Florida high school rampage that they decided he should be forcibly committed. But the recommendation was never acted upon....The documents in the criminal case against Nikolas Cruz, which were obtained by The Associated Press, show school officials and a sheriff's deputy recommended in September 2016 that Cruz be involuntarily committed for a mental evaluation.

The documents were provided by a psychological assessment service initiated by Cruz's mother called Henderson Behavioral Health. The documents show a high school resource officer who was also a sheriff's deputy and two school counselors recommended in September 2016 that Cruz be committed for mental evaluation under Florida's Baker Act. That law allows for involuntary commitment for mental health examination for at least three days....

There is no evidence Cruz was ever committed. Coincidentally, the school resource officer who recommended that Cruz be "Baker Acted" was Scot Peterson — the same Broward Sheriff's Office deputy who resigned amid accusations he failed to respond to the shooting by staying outside the building where the killings occurred.

So while he was a coward, he apparently wasn't stupid.

School resource officer Blaine Gaskill responded to the scene in less than a minute, the sheriff said. Gaskill fired a round at the shooter, and the shooter fired a round simultaneously, Cameron said.
Rollins was later pronounced dead. Gaskill was unharmed. The 16-year-old female student is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, and the 14-year-old male student who was shot is in stable condition.

Cameron said he was not sure if Gaskill's bullet hit the suspect, but he praised the officer's quick response to the situation.
"He responded exactly as we train our personnel to respond," he said.

Didn't even think of that.

Yeah, they kept portraying Travon as an innocent little Middle Schooler instead of the thug that he was.

... Officials identified the alleged shooter as Great Mills student Austin Wyatt Rollins, 17. They said he fired a Glock 9-millimeter gun at a 16-year-old girl, who was critically injured, and a 14-year-old boy, who was listed in good condition Tuesday.

A school resource officer, Deputy First Class Blaine Gaskill, responded quickly to the scene in a first-floor hallway at the school, the sheriff’s office said. As Gaskill fired at Rollins, Rollins almost simultaneously fired his gun.

Gaskill was not injured in the shooting.

St. Mary’s County Sheriff Tim Cameron said said there is an “indication that a prior relationship existed between the shooter and the female victim.” Officers are working to determine if that was part of the motive, and they are trying to determine which shots struck which individuals. ...

Maryland Governor Praises School Resource Officer Response: ‘This Is a Tough Guy,’ Took ‘Right Kind of Action’
BY: Conor Beck
March 20, 2018 4:13 pm

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R.) spoke at a press conference in the wake of a school shooting on Tuesday where he praised the school resource officer who engaged the attacker.

A reporter asked Hogan if he thought the way the school resource officer responded to the shooting at Great Mills High School should be an example for school districts across the country.

"We are just getting all the facts, but I had the opportunity to talk to Sheriff Cameron, and it sure sounds like this is exactly the way this is how it should have been handled," the governor responded.  "This is a tough guy who apparently closed in very quickly and took the right kind of action," Hogan added. "While it's still tragic, he may have saved other people's lives."  ...  More at Free Beacon

This is how you deal with school shooters -- not take away firearms from law-abiding citizens.

In this incident, we have 2 wounded, not 17 dead.

Not that this matters to the anti-gun crowd and heads-in-the-sand parents, teachers and administrators who don't want armed security or arming teachers because it's "dangerous" or some other idiotic reason.

By the way, Deputy Gaskill is a hero.  Not that the anti-gun crowd or liberal snowflakes will honor him as such.

This is the officer who stopped the Maryland school shooter
NY Post, Mar 20, 2018, Lia Eustachewich

The officer who confronted the Maryland school shooter Tuesday was identified as 34-year-old Blaine Gaskill, a veteran sheriff’s deputy with SWAT training.

A six-year St. Mary’s County sheriff’s deputy, Gaskill worked as a school resource officer at Great Mills High School since August.

He’s credited with stopping gunman Austin Wyatt Rollins, who shot a 16-year-old female student he’d had a prior relationship with, authorities said. A 14-year-old male student also was injured.

Gaskill and Rollins, 17, fired a shot at exactly the same time – and it’s unclear whether Rollins committed suicide or died from Gaskill’s bullet.
