McConnell urging Mississippi gov to appoint himself if Cochran resigns: report
By Lisa Hagen - 02/02/18 04:04 PM EST

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) urged Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant (R) to consider appointing himself to Sen. Thad Cochran’s (R-Miss.) seat if he decides to resign, according to The Washington Post.

McConnell reportedly spoke directly to Bryant about potential Senate plans and The Clarion-Ledger in Jackson confirmed that President Trump also discussed those plans with the governor.

There’s been speculation surrounding a possible resignation from Cochran. The 80-year-old senator has recently had some health issues and had a urinary tract infection late last year, which kept him away from the Senate for several weeks in September and October.

How would this go over with the public?  Not so well, I would imagine.

Any of the three Republican house members would be more conservative than Cochran.  Appointing Palazzo opens the 4th district for Chris McDaniel.  Or, just appoint McD, over the howls of protest from McConnell.
