Ian Calderon wants restaurateurs to think long and hard before giving you a straw.

Calderon, the Democratic majority leader in California's lower house, has introduced a bill to stop sit-down restaurants from offering customers straws with their beverages unless they specifically request one. Under Calderon's law, a waiter who serves a drink with an unrequested straw in it would face up to 6 months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.

"We need to create awareness around the issue of one-time use plastic straws and its detrimental effects on our landfills, waterways, and oceans," Calderon explained in a press release.

This isn't just Calderon's crusade. The California cities of San Luis Obispo and Davis both passed straws-on-request laws last year, and Manhattan Beach maintains a prohibition on all disposable plastics. And up in Seattle, food service businesses won't be allowed to offer plastic straws or utensils as of July.

The Los Angeles Times has gotten behind the movement, endorsing straws-on-request policies in an editorial that also warned that "repetitive sucking may cause or exacerbate wrinkles on the lips or around the mouth." Celebrity astronomer Neil DeGrasse Tyson (always up for a little chiding) and Entourage star Adrian Grenier have appeared in videos where an octopus slaps them in the face for using a plastic straw.

Must be nice that they have that state running so well they can focus time on straws at restaurants. It's not like they have people living in tents all over the place or anything.

So restaurants won't offer straws any more and you'll just have to pray that their dishmachines are up to code.  Lovely.   *****rollingeyes*****

Praying in public is also a $1,000 fine.

Why not simply mandate the use of wax paper straws?

Virtually every case of some politician trying to restrict the public use of something in the past fifty years has been authored by a liberal Democrat. They just never give up on their ultimate plan to control the movements of all humans.  Because humans are evil...or something.

But criminals in CA illegally get sanctuary and all the benefits and freebies they can handle.

I can see it now in practice:

 I’m from the Straw Police.

1) Can you tell me whether or not you requested that straw with your drink?

2)  What is your intended use of that straw?

3) How will you be disposing of said straw when you have finished sucking on it without harming the environment?

My next question is this --- how will this affect the jobs of those in the straw industry?

Here's a better idea --- Why not just charge $1000.00 per straw? That would stop those evil straw users!

Or here's an even BETTER ONE: all applicants be subject to a seven day waiting period, before being able to get their hands on a plastic straw.

If it saves the life of even one child, it will be worth it...

Just because it was "introduced" doesn't mean it will get passed.  That said...

it's getting more and more surreal as each day goes by [shaking head in disbelief], especially in places like California, where the fascists roam free and the humans revert to animals (crapping in public).  That something that stupid would even be considered or introduced as legislation is a clear indication of just how demented some "lawmakers" in blue states are.  It's sad that the left is fundamentally transforming such a beautiful state into a proverbial "S***hole".

I still have an aunt and several cousins living in LA.  Here's hoping that they come to their senses and return/move back to Texas.  But I'm not holding my breath on that hope.

Whatever will the authorities do if an illegal alien waiter provides unrequested straws to a black lesbian couple in a Muslim-owned restaurant? Will their heads explode, or does everyone immediately qualify for amnesty?

They know, that the moment they fight back, their lives as they have lived them, are over. -Alexander Solzhenitsyn

The state doesn't need straws, because it already sucks enough.
I disagree.  Circle gets the square.
