Police in a Colorado city just outside of Denver said "multiple deputies" are down after being shot while responding to a disturbance call early Sunday.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said in a tweet that citizens in Highlands Ranch should shelter in place and avoid windows.

“We have multiple officers down,” Deputy Jason Blanchard told the Denver Post. “We are not giving numbers or status at this point, we are still working on getting the suspect in custody.”

Police say they are working in the area of County Line Rd between Colorado Blvd and University Blvd in Highlands Ranch, located south of Denver.

“Any citizens in the affected area are instructed to shelter in place, avoid windows and stay away from exterior walls,” the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said, calling it an “active event.”

The officers were shot while responding to a disturbance call around 6 a.m. local time, a police spokeswoman told the Denver Post, adding that a SWAT team is on the scene.

Daily Mail is reporting that as of 7 minutes ago the shooter was still on the loose...it's an active shooter situation.

Highlands Ranch is affluent, and I don't think Copper Canyon Apartments are bad.

I keep scrolling through the news channels looking for live updates and they are all continuing with their normal programming.

Weird.  :pondering:

UPDATE: Seven people are confirmed at area hospitals following the Douglas County shooting this morning. The suspect remains at large as of this writing.

UPDATE: Three of the injured were taken to Skyridge Medical Center in Lone Tree with non-critical injuries: http://dpo.st/2CucpoE

7 people in hospitals, 3 with non-critical injuries?  I don't want to read anything into this, just what they are telling us.

The Denver Post twitter account seems fairly current.

This is why police are so twitchy about domestic disturbances.  Prayers for the officer's family.

Updated story:

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office confirmed five deputies and two citizens were shot early Sunday morning. One of those deputies has died. The severity of injuries for the other six is unknown at this time.

The sheriff's office first told 11 News the situation was, "not looking good for us" shortly after the first shots were fired.

The shooting happened in the 3400 block of County Line Road. That's between Colorado and University boulevards in Highlands Ranch.

The incident began when deputies responded to a domestic disturbance just before 5:15 a.m. at the Copper Canyon Apartments. During the investigation, shots were fired.

Around 9:30 a.m., deputies confirmed the suspect was shot and was believed to be dead and no longer a threat. It's unknown if the suspect was shot by deputies or not.

Just saw an update on Facebook from someone who lives near where the incident happened...they are starting the procession for the officer that was killed at the hospital where he was taken.

Another update:

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2017/12/31/colorado-police-working-officer-down-situation-outside-denver.html

Deputy killed was 29, married, father of 2 small children.

Apparently stemmed from a dispute between the perp and the sheriff.  Perp allegedly was an Iraq war veteran.

Let's draw a comparison to the story the story about he SWATing. Both involved reports of violence and death. Both involved police responding to situations responding to situations where there was a missing information. In this one a cop ends up dead in the other an unarmed civilian. Now before I get accused of being ultra pro cop or ultra anti cop. ask yourselves one question. Are you willing to strap on a gun every day leave your family behind in freezing cold weather or blistering hot weather, middle of the night, miss birthday parties, anniversaries etc.... to risk your life in similar situations.

All I am saying is let's wait until all the facts are in before casting aspersions on the men and women that do a job that the vast majority of us would never do in a million years.
