Amtrak train derails in Washington state onto Interstate 5; injuries reported [Update: Fatalities]

Injuries were reported after an Amtrak train derailed Monday morning in Washington state outside of Tacoma, causing at least one train car to fall off an overpass and onto an interstate highway, officials said.

Amtrak train 501 was traveling southbound from Seattle when it derailed along Interstate 5. "Injuries and casualties were reported," Pierce County Sheriff's Office said, though it's unclear how many people that included.

Amtrak said it was "aware of an incident involving Amtrak train 501" in a Twitter post.

A highway camera showed at least one train car toppled onto the road, causing a traffic jam.

Chris Kaines, the chair of Pierce Transit's advisory board, said on Twitter "The train has derailed. Emergency crews are on the scene. Massive damage. People are hurt."

The Pierce County Sheriff's Department says the train was headed southbound. Casualties and injuries reported, but how many was not immediately known. The department says several cars on I-5 were struck by the derailed Amtrak train cars. Multiple motorists were injured, but none were killed.

Det. Ed Troyer saying cars are in the woods, so what we’re seeing on the TV is only a small portion of the carnage.

The stories seem to say this was the first day of this new run, I'm sure they tested it plenty before doing this.

77 people being transferred to hospitals.  Military personnel and hospitals are engaged in the rescue, per reports.

Just heard about this. I'm in a hospital North of the derailment (Wife having sugury) and I expect the emergency entry to be very busy real soon.   

No fatality count yet on local Seattle area news, except they keep saying multiple fatalities.

I've been on a train that derailed but it was nowhere near a bridge or overpass. When it is on one of these, that must be when it then becomes very complicated.

I worked at a Baltimore area hospital in 1987 when the Amtrak collision occurred in Chase, MD.  Horrible assortment of injuries put our disaster plan into effect.  Luckily, there were a number of hospitals in the area to handle overflow of the most seriously injured.

Train was going 80 mph. Daily Mail says no motorists were killed.
