In our modern and fast-paced lives, it can be difficult to keep a healthy balance of nutrients in our food. Sugar is one of these nutrients, and the cells in our body would die without it.

Consuming too much sugar, however, raises the risk of several problems, including poor dental health, obesity, and type 2 diabetes.

To keep control of sugar levels, it helps to know just how much sugar there is in the food we eat. Here, we list the sugar content of numerous everyday foods, both processed and natural.

(this calc is not perfectly exact but close enough to use as a general rule)

1) Grab a food label and find the amount of total carbohydrate in grams
2) Subtract the fiber grams
3) Divide the result by 5
4) The answer you get is the number of teaspoons of sugar that you will ingest from the carbohydrate in one serving of that particular food

So how much sugar do we need?  At any given time of the day we need about one teaspoon of sugar in our blood stream to keep all systems stable.   To do this we need to ingest roughly 10-12 teaspoons of sugar a day.  No, not table sugar.   The sugars we need are naturally occuring in high quality carbohydrates like veggies, whole fruit, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, etc.

This is a very good article too.

Also, four grams of sugar is equal to one teaspoon.  I think a Dr. Pepper has 40 grams of sugar.  HEB is now making several  soft drink that have 6 grams.

Products have recently changed to a reduced sugar content.
I think it's more about saving the company money than health.
