"Happy birthday, you little thief!"
Putin's [supposed] opposition has been using that "thief" slogan for many years.
It might refer to how Putin took power in Russia at a time when President Yeltsin
kept replacing Prime Ministers one after the other... until he appointed a little known
KGB guy, Putin... who many expected Yeltsin to fire in short order as he had fired so
many other PMs in succession. But Yeltsin surprised the world by suddenly resigning
on Y2K eve, putting Putin in total control of Russia.
The slogan is not necessarily an insult. It reminds me of how Cyrus conquered Babylon
[he basically stole the empire like a thief in the middle of the night] and how the Bible
describes the second coming of Christ, "like a thief." [1 Thessalonians 5:2, Revelation 16:15]
