Bad enough: the Obama White House possibly spying on Donaldus Minimus last year.
Worse enough: the Nixon White House a) spying on its own people (if I remember right, that
was Henry Kissinger's brilliant idea to have several White House phones tapped---including
then-speechwriter William Safire, who fumed publicly over it when he discovered it, by
which discovery Safire had a very wide platform: he'd become a New York Times
columnist); and, b) trying to sic the CIA on the FBI to back the FBI off the Watergate
investigations.
True enough: Show me a White House, almost any White House, and you could probably find
some administration spying on some candidate, if not its own people. And, alas, it
didn't begin with Watergate.
