Secret Service: We have funding to protect Trump through September

The Secret Service said Monday it has enough money to protect President Trump through September, even as the agency acknowledged it’s running up against its spending limit for agents protecting the president and his family.
 
“The Secret Service has the funding it needs to meet all current mission requirements for the remainder of the fiscal year and compensate employees for overtime within statutory pay caps,” agency director Randolph “Tex” Alles said in a statement.
 
The current fiscal year ends Sept. 30.
 
Alles said around 1,100 employees will hit federally mandated caps on salary and overtime that were supposed to last the entire year and suggested he will ask Congress to pass legislation as it did last year to allow the agency to exceed those pay caps.

Chaffetz Sets The Record Straight After Report Emerges On Secret Service, Trump

After a new media report blamed the size and traveling habits of President Donald Trump’s family for the fact that Secret Service protection costs are skyrocketing, Fox commentator and former House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz put the matter into perspective, bluntly.

A USA Today report claimed that the “Secret Service can no longer pay hundreds of agents it needs to carry out an expanded protective mission – in large part due to the sheer size of President Trump’s family and efforts necessary to secure their multiple residences up and down the East Coast.”

In response to which Chaffetz had one word: “Hogwash.“

Secret Service Director Randolph Alles said the problem does not originate with Trump:

“This issue is not one that can be attributed to the current administration’s protection requirements, but rather has been an ongoing issue for nearly a decade due to an overall increase in operational tempo.”

Chaffetz, who while in Congress tried to remedy the fact that the Secret Service was asked to do too much with too little, said that Obama-era mismanagement led to a drastic situation in 2016, when the presidential primaries overtaxed the Secret Service’s ability to meet its needs and stay within its budget.

“The fundamental problem is that they are still understaffed by nearly 1,000 agents, and the consequence is the people that are there have to work more hours than they ever should be scheduled to work,” Chaffetz said. “You don’t want an agent who’s been on the job for 12 hours a day for 30 days in a row standing guard on the president; that’s not good for anyone.”

In 2016, more than $20 million was approved for agents who worked overtime, with the idea that reforms would address the situation in future years.

“This was supposed to be a one-time recognition of a problem that still hasn’t been fixed and that is that they are dramatically understaffed,” Chaffetz said.
