STEUBENVILLE — Jefferson County Common Pleas Judge Joseph Bruzzese was shot this morning as he was walking to the entrance of the Jefferson Counrt Courthouse.

The shooting occurred just minutes after 8 a.m. today in Court Alley, which is adjacent to the courthouse.

Bruzzese was taken by LifeFlight to a Pittsburgh-area hospital.

Steubenville City Manager Jim Mavromatis briefed reporters this morning and said a court probation officer witnessed the shooting and immediately started returning fire at the suspected shooter.

Mavromatis said the suspect was killed, and a second man who was in a car with the suspect was taken into custody by City Police.

The courthouse is closed this morning while the investigation by local law enforcement officers continues.

Mavromatis said the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, City Police and Ohio State Highway Patrol have done “an excellent job” securing the crime scene and are now working with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation to look for shell casings and any evidence.

The suspect’s body was still lying next to a car in the Huntington Bank drive-thru area this morning.

Mavromatis said the suspect apparently backed into another car in an attempt to escape.

Bruzzese apparently was walking from Fourth Street to a narrow alley toward the courthouse when he was “ambushed,” Mavromatis said.

The Ohio Courts of Common Pleas are the trial courts of the state court system of Ohio.

The courts of common pleas are the trial courts of general jurisdiction in the state. They are the only trial courts created by the Ohio Constitution (in Article IV, Section 1). The duties of the courts are outlined in Article IV, Section 4. Each of Ohio's 88 counties has a court of common pleas. The Ohio General Assembly (the state legislature) has the power to divide courts of common pleas into divisions, and has done so, establishing general, domestic relations, juvenile, and probate divisions:

From what I understand, this judge is a good guy. Who knows what this is all about. Perhaps the co-conspirator will tell police.

  • I could eat it raw but why when I have fire
Perhaps the attacker didn't know how to file for a change of venue??

Hope the judge is ok.

Officials also think the judge returned fire as well because his gun is lying on the ground. A probation officer saved his life.

Officials say they have looked at surveillance video and believe they know the identity of the two shooters.

Good on the judge.  One less thug to feed, clothe and house at taxpayer expense.  Prayers lifted up for the judge's speedy recovery.

  • All deserve a trial if accused
Dean Martin was born in Steubenville,  his parents came from D'Abruzzo province in Italy. Note, how the surname of the judge is even slightly like that name. Steubenville is also the home of Franciscan university.

It will be interesting to find out more about this story as to the hows and whys.

(The county sheriff Fred Abdalla) said officers are checking court records to see what involvement the suspect had with Bruzzese.

Abdalla said he is aware of threats being made in retaliation for killing of the shooting suspect.

“Police in the region have been notified,” he said. “I hope nothing like that happens. If it does, we are prepared to handle it.”  ...

A man who was in the car with the shooter was grazed by a bullet and was taken to Trinity Medical Center West. He told law enforcement interviewers he had been unaware of what was happening. Abdalla said that man and the shooting suspect had been drinking last night when the suspect said he had to be in court early today. ...

Later today, he said, “Every judge should be armed today in America. Prosecutors need to be armed. It was a cold-blooded attempted murder on a judge.”

Abdalla noted Bruzzese is an avid sportsman and hunter, which helped fight off the attack.

“If any judge could do it, it is him,” he commented. “There are so many nuts running around seeking retaliation.”  ...

Sounds like black gangs and drugs are involved.

Unconfirmed reports that the shooter was the father of one of the boys infamously involved in the "Steubenville rape case" (the football players who drugged and sexually assaulted an unconscious girl a few years ago, and videotaped it).

My Italian mother had some relatives living in Steubenville.  A lot of Italians lived there.

Sometimes the relatives would come for a visit when I was a kid.  Used to take them hours to get to our house.  This was back in the day when we didn't have interstates.  Now I think you can get here from Steubenville in under an hour.

I remember watching Martin singing on his tv show one time substituting Steubenville for some other city in a song. Can't remember the song.
As far as taking forever to get somewhere in the pre four lane interstate days, you can thank all the crooked pols who took money from city officials back in the twenties and ran the new interstate right through all the small towns. The original plan was to bypass the small towns, but the big shots in the small towns didn't want traffic to bypass all their town businesses.
So instead of being able to drive relatively non-stop from origin to finish with a few pit stops here and there,  cars were forced to drive through many podunk towns to get from here to there.
The wife and I occasionally like to take two lane roads to get away from the heavy four lane traffic, but it's usually a pain in the posterior to get through the numerous small towns with their 25 mph speed limits and stop signs.

Steubenville Shooting Suspect Had Civil Lawsuit Pending Before Judge Bruzzese

MARK LAW For The Intelligencer

STEUBENVILLE — Nathaniel Richmond, 51, of Steubenville — the man authorities said died in a shootout after he opened fire Monday morning on Jefferson County Common Pleas Judge Joseph Bruzzese Jr. — had a civil case pending before the judge.

Richmond filed a wrongful death lawsuit in April on behalf of his mother, Mae Etta Richmond, who was killed in a fire on Wellesley Avenue on April 27, 2015. The fire also took the life of Te’On Dillard, 2.  ...

Attorneys for the housing authority had filed a motion on Friday to dismiss the punitive damages in the case and another claim that the housing authority had destroyed the house in order to disrupt the plaintiff’s case.

A hearing on the motion was scheduled to be heard next Monday morning before Bruzzese.

According to Jefferson County court records, Richmond was indicted by the county grand jury in November 2002 on charges of felonious assault and attempted murder, with specifications of having a firearm and it being a drive-by shooting, and having a gun as a convicted felon.

He pleaded guilty one month later to the felonious assault charge and was sentenced to five years in prison.

Richmond was an outspoken proponent of his son, Ma’Lik, who was convicted in the Steubenville rape case.  ...

‘Ambush And Attempted Murder’ of Jefferson County Judge in Steubenville
Richmond interacted with police hours prior

DAVE GOSSETT For The Intelligencer

STEUBENVILLE — Nathaniel Richmond spent his final hours Monday morning driving in downtown Steubenville, where he was stopped at 3:58 a.m. for having only one operable headlight.

The 51-year-old Richmond was issued a warning by a Steubenville police officer and told to get the defective headlight fixed before driving again.

Four hours later, Richmond would be waiting at the Huntington Bank drive-thru on Market Street to “ambush” Jefferson County Judge Joseph Bruzzese, as the 65-year-old jurist approached the Court Alley entrance of the courthouse.

“It was an ambush and attempted murder on our judge. Nathaniel Richmond arrived at the bank drive-thru at about 7:13 a.m., then he left and returned at 7:30 a.m.,” an emotional Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla told a growing crowd of reporters Monday afternoon.

Abdalla said security surveillance video at the courthouse captured Richmond emerging from a parked car and walking quickly toward Bruzzese.

“He basically shot point blank at the judge and we believe he fired five times. The judge used his gun and fired at Richmond. The judge fell and attempted to pick up his gun. At that point a court probation officer who was coming to work ordered Richmond to drop his weapon and when Richmond turned to the officer with his gun raised, the officer shot Richmond. Whoever thought this could happen here,” Abdalla asked. ...
