Scalise calls into GOP meeting for first time since shooting
By Jacqueline Thomsen - 07/24/17 07:38 PM EDT

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) made a surprise call into a GOP whip meeting on Monday night, his first time calling in since he was critically injured in a shooting last month.

GOP lawmakers cheered as Scalise spoke to them over the phone, Politico reported. The lawmaker has been recovering at MedStar Washington Hospital Center for a devastating gunshot wound after the shooting at a congressional baseball practice in June.

Scalise told the group that he was preparing to begin rehab from his injuries.

Scalise also thanked lawmakers for passing a bill that will allows funding in the Capitol Police Memorial Fund to go to the two Capitol Police officers who were injured in the shooting. Officers David Bailey and Crystal Griner were both injured when they took down the shooter last month.

"Crystal and David saved our lives," Scalise said on the call.
