Bush and Clinton lecture Trump: Ex-presidents hit out at Donald with jabs about 'humility' and 'arrogance' before gushing about their friendship that's like having a 'brother from a different mother'
Daily Mail/UK, Jul 13, 2017

*Former US presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton told a forum in Dallas on Thursday that they were able to forge mutual bonds of respect and friendship

*They said their relationship was possible because the other had been gracious in victory and respectful of presidential power

*Though they never mentioned President Donald Trump by name, the audience understood they were implicitly criticizing their successor

*The 43rd president said he was impressed by the fact that his predecessor was gracious to his father when he defeated him to win the presidency in 1992

*Bush and Clinton said they have enjoyed their lives after the presidency but would not trade their current status for their eight years in office

<snip>

And the two also discussed their longstanding friendship. W Bush said of Clinton at one point ‘He’s my brother from another mother’ to laughter from the crowd.

Ronald Reagan's greatest and most enduring mistake was George Herbert Walker Bush....a member of a political dynasty that should have begun and ended with Prescott Bush.

GWB is a disgrace.

We should have gone for a 270 win ... the landslide doesn't justify elevating the Bush family.  It is the mistake that brought us Clinton, Shrub and Obama .... and their fingerprints on our descent into globalism and socialism.

No, George W Bush is not a disgrace and that article makes a lot of claims that aren't true at all.  Neither man criticized Trump ... it was assumed by the so-called journalist that they did.

As far as how the Clinton's treated GHWB, it was childish and horrible... removing all the W's from the keyboards for example.  The Clinton's were and are trash.

GWB is an affable man.  Apparently, he was able to forge a friendship with Clinton but I'm sure it is a surface thing.  GWB never cheated on Laura.  There was an incident during his presidency when he had a female staff member barred from his office because she kept coming on to him.  When an aide questioned the move, he said, "I'm a married man."

I don't like this bromance either but I'm not gonna condemn GWB on the basis of it.

No, George W Bush is not a disgrace .../

Yes, yes he is.  He followed his father's "new world order" with "compassionate conservatism", a nice, righteous sounding brand of socialism.  And let's not forget that GWB's presidency began with the collapse of the World Trade Centers and ended with the collapse of the economy.  The time in between the two collapses was littered with wars we're still struggling to win and extricate ourselves from and a destabilized Middle East.

He was also a weak man hiding behind the guise of "gentleman".  W allowed the media to beat him without mercy --- never so much as raising his hands to protect his own skull from the punches.  He so diminished the Republican brand that he was not permitted to be onsite for the Republican Conventions in 2008 and 2012.  The coward chose not to attend in 2016...because little Jebbie had been beaten like a drum by a political novice.

To be totally fair, W probably also didn't want to be put in the position of having to finally speak out against Obama and his regime.  He probably would have had too hard a time finding something to criticize.

That W admits he considers BJ to be a "brother from another mother" is not a surprise.  It is a relief.  GWB is finally self-unmasking who he truly is:  an elitist globalist.

Agree to disagree on this, RIV.  The Bush family is a strong family with strong ties to each other.  I admire that.  And Trump was disgraceful in his abuse of ...not only Jeb but Bush himself.  No one could blame him for being ticked at Trump ... at least I couldn't.

You can call it weakness but Bush's Compassionate Conservatism grew out of a ... perhaps misplaced view .. of the goodness of others.

He certainly was not perfect, but this retroactive trashing of a good man irritates the heck out of me.

I marched in Austin during the recount to support Bush. By the end of his presidency, I was no longer a fan. Compassionate conservatism is code for dimocrap lite. He was a big government guy. When he did nothing to clamp down our borders after 911, I was very unhappy. When he did the bailouts, he lost me for good. I did not know how close he is to BJ- makes sense I guess.

Cool...this was all you needed to post @Emjay , because it's all I read.

@Right_in_Virginia

Just for your information, this kind of attack on a good man turns me off of Trump, because I think of how unfair he was during the primaries.

If that's what you're aiming for, go for it.

And I resent your refusing to read my post defending GWB.  I read your post abusing him.

Why are you acting like this?

Agreeing to disagree means the debate is ended ... albeit in a stalemate, but ended none-the-less ... and we've agreed to disagree.

That may be true.  A little before my time, but I remember reading much later about how much the Dems feared GHWB at the time -- was it agreeing to not blocking Ford for VP if GHWB agreed not to run for POTUS in the next election?

Anyway, I still look back and wonder how things might have been if Reagan/Rumsfeld had won.

The reason I'm mad is that it was dismissive of you to say that you refused to read my post.

G W Bush is the ONLY person to ever have served in the office of President of the United States that I personally know.  To say that his service in that office was a great disappointment to me is a gross understatement.

Heck of a nice guy.  I've seen him leave an event and stop to talk to a homeless person for 10 minutes while his handlers were trying to get him in the car.  But nice guy doesn't translate necessarily to effective leader.  Especially if you run as a Republican and lead like a Democrat.

I was thinking the other day that since I've been 18, we've had 7 presidents.

Carter
Reagan
Bush
Clinton
Bush
Obama
Trump

Only one keeper among them.  How sad is that?

I'd rather live next door to Bush but Trump has done more good for this nation in 6 months than W did in 8 years, with all due respect & IMO.

Try not to remain mad at @Right_in_Virginia, @Emjay.

After all, she let you know that she prefers to remain ignorant over hearing from others.

There's something admirable about admitting such small-mindedness publicly.  She could have kept quiet and had others take her seriously.  But this way, people can just move on and continue to ignore her admittedly-ill-informed rantings.*  She's really being very kind and doing everyone a favor!

I hope that helps you let go of your anger and focus on a beautiful day ahead!

*(I do stand aware that she might read those two words -- "ignore her ..." -- out of context and down the line make some claim that I put her on ignore [yoo-hoo, @CatherineofAragon].)
