Smoking on the rise in movies aimed at young: study
July 7, 2017

(HealthDay)—Progress to keep tobacco use out of kid-friendly movies is apparently going up in smoke.

The number of youth-focused films that showed smoking rose sharply between 2010 and 2016, a new study reveals.

During that time, 46 percent of movies with smoking were youth-rated. That's 210 of the 459 top-grossing films. And the number of smoking scenes in movies rated PG-13—suitable for teens—surged, from 564 in 2010 to 809 in 2016.

How can this be?  Experts and media spokespeople always assure us movies and video games don't have an effect of behavior.  Why, then, are cigarette companies trying to lure young people the way "experts" say doesn't work. :pondering:

Nobody is lured into smoking by seeing it. Both of my parents smoked, one sister never smoked, one smoked intermittently for 10 or 15 years and I was the only one to become a regular smoker and I didn't start till I was 17 years old.

Lots of weasel words like "Youth Rated" in the article. Its not like the little mermaid was crawling up on land to keep her smokes dry. PG-13 is "child rated" and can contain some pretty intense stuff.

Smoking is a bad idea and I'm glad I quit but I'll take smoking over dishonesty any day of the week. This crap reminds me of the TRUTH ad with the hip black woman condemns the tobacco companies for targeting black kids by advertising near primarily black schools. The reality is that blacks have a higher likelihood of going to urban schools with retail nearby and retail stores advertise all kinds of products. Where I went to school the nearest town was about 4 miles away as the crow flies so naturally we didn't see any advertising near the school.
