Ivanka Trump makes her case for national paid family leave program

First daughter Ivanka Trump penned an op-ed Tuesday, making her case why paid family leave is an important policy that benefits American women as well as the economy.

"Providing a national guaranteed paid-leave program — with a reasonable time limit and benefit cap — isn’t an entitlement, it’s an investment in America’s working families,” Trump wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed.

She laid out the benefits from such a program, saying it will lead to "Healthier children and parents in more tightly bonded families, greater financial stability and stronger attachment to the labor force are among the most important.”
But she argued that such programs are not reaching "the poorest, most vulnerable workers in our society ..."

Many of the larger companies already have some sort of FL and many pay for so many weeks.  Smaller companies rarely do and most cannot afford to do so.

Sorta torn on the whole issue. Mommas need to be with their kids the first several months..actually much longer like to age 16 but I will be labeled as quite mysoginistic for saying that...but at the same time many families forced to have 2 breadwinners.

Another give away federal program.  Once passed, it will stay forever and the money will be increased - money we do not have.  I read that article, and it sounds like six weeks free money for the father AND for the mother.  That is twelve weeks the federal government gives them money.  Have more kids and get more money.

I grew up in a time when the family got nothing from government or their employer except for what money they earned by working.  Social Security began in 1935 so my father was in the generation that first got that.  They got nothing from the Sun Oil Company where he worked except for his pay check.  They bought their own medical insurance and life insurance.  Families were responsible for their own lives.  The family made it on their own.  Families in need were helped by churches.

Socialism will kill this country when there is not enough government money to give to those who are in government give away programs.  We are actually at that point since our debt keeps rising and this program will add to the debt since we already don't have the money.  The Trump family dynasty rushes us to collapse.

Why do you think they are his enemy?  The 'role' or character he is playing to the public is one thing, but this is family. He has at least shown with Ivanka, he will put his family above country or often his own ego. At that, his 'wrasslin' character he is playing is probably pretty low on where his loyalty lays.

We're already 2 months into a 2 week road construction project on the primary road I travel to work every day. A flagman explained to me why they only work 3 days per week on the big job. They do 3 days on the big job and 2 on other jobs to keep the federal money flowing for as long as possible. They've also taken about 10 days of holiday time away from the job since May.

They didn't work yesterday and they won't be working today but Monday I'll be back to sitting in traffic as they let cars from the other direction come through before turning us loose.

My small company already has a family leave program.   Employees get time off from roughly 5pm to 8am of the next day five days a week.   They get all day Sat and Sunday off too!!!

It seems to me that any employer could set up a deduction account that employees could voluntarily contribute to, then draw upon when they use the leave they're already entitled to? What could be fairer than that?

As it is, relatively few employees want to take unpaid time off. If they get paid everyone will go for it and it will be an even bigger administrative nightmare than it is now...
