From a WAPO story..

"Audio of the gunfire was recorded by a nearby resident’s surveillance system. The recording, which detectives have listened to, reveals about 22 rounds when listened to at a normal speed.

Slowing the recording, it becomes more clear that there are what sounds like two clusters of shots fired. The first — over a four-second burst — is approximately 22 gunshots, some erupting at almost the same time. There is a pause of perhaps 1.5 seconds. Then there are what sounds like approximately six shots, in a more steady series, over about 1.5 seconds.

The rapid shots in such a compressed time have caught the attention of those following the case or who have learned about it.

“I get the impression that there are two shooters,” said Vernon Geberth, a retired New York City Police homicide commander who provides instruction and consultation on homicide cases and listened to the audio at the request of The Washington Post.

The number of rounds — about 28 — suggests “overkill,” meaning the killer or killers may have had a vendetta to harm at least one of the victims.

“That’s a lot of shots fired. When you open up like that, it sounds personal,” said Geberth, author of “Practical Homicide Investigation” and other books.

He described the first barrage of shots as “definitely ‘overkill’ type shots.”

“The follow-up six are more like to confirm the kill,” he said."

Sounds like a possible drug deal gone bad.

Thinking something along the same lines.....    Nerds need spending money....dabble in selling to circle-of-influence...in order to gain respect and friends among their classmates....competition (MS-13) eliminates them.

These kids were straight A students, both going on to college.

It just sounds similar to a couple of murders of affluent kids in back alleys in bad neighborhoods of Detroit in recent years.

Shadi's family is not affluent.   Blue collar parent.   My friend used to be a regional manager for Chi-Chi's and then Fuddrucker's and then I believe the Macaroni Grill chain.

Then one day, he had a heart attack from taking Xeralto....got a cash settlement...bought a truck...and started doing minor handyman repairs, that grew to several crews.

His mom works at Shady Grove Hospital in billing, where Shadi volunteered and decided to become a doctor.

Still get tears in my eyes thinking about them.   Only child snatched away on the eve of Graduation.

2 Germantown, [Maryland] students fatally shot night before graduation

WASHINGTON — Detectives in Montgomery County, Maryland, are investigating the shooting deaths of two Germantown students. They were found dead in the Montgomery Village area Monday night on the eve of their graduation.

Police said they received a 911 call from someone who reported hearing gunshots in the 8200 block of Gallery Court, just south of East Village Avenue, around 10:45 p.m. Monday.

When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered two bodies inside a Honda Civic. Police are treating the deaths as a double homicide.

On Tuesday morning, police identified the victims as Shadi Adi Najjar, 17, of Breezedale Lane in Germantown, and Artem S. Ziberov, 18, of Flag Harbor Drive in Germantown. They were slated to don their caps and gowns Tuesday, school officials told WTOP.

Northwest High School Principal Jimmy D’Andrea addressed both deaths during graduation, as well as the death of a third student, Nigel Hendrickson, who died in January.

“We have heavy hearts,” D’Andrea said to the gathered students before asking for a moment of silence.

“I know all three of these gentlemen would want us to move forward today and celebrate,” he continued afterward. “I knew Nigel this year, and I had the honor of being Artem’s and Shadi’s principal both in middle school and again now.

“In fact, when I spoke to Artem’s mother this morning, while extremely upset, her words to me were, and I quote, ‘I hope everyone has a great celebration today.’ So let’s honor the memory of these three gentlemen by celebrating the accomplishments of this wonderful class.”

D’Andrea invited Hendrickson’s mother, Esther Hendrickson, to the stage to accept her son’s diploma on his behalf. He told the crowd at Constitution Hall that he would be delivering Najjar and Ziberov’s diplomas to their respective families.

The Northwest High School principal’s graduation comments come after a letter he sent to families earlier in the day.

“For those of you who knew Artem and Shadi, we ask that you remember and celebrate them. They were both excellent students who had a positive impact on those around them, and they will be greatly missed,” D’Andrea wrote.

D’Andrea also noted that there would be a support team of counselors at DAR Constitution Hall during the graduation ceremonies and at the school on Wednesday.

“It’s very sad,” said Eric Boyd, a Northwest alum and Prince George’s County middle school teacher from Silver Spring who was at Tuesday’s ceremony for his nephew. “And honestly, being a teacher, I’ve experienced some of this with my students. I know how other teachers are feeling, plus the parents. … It’s a heinous crime, honestly.”

He offered his condolences to both families and to anyone mourning the loss of Najjar and Ziberov.

Rayah Kaikai, parent of a Northwest 2017 grad and registered nurse, echoed Boyd’s sentiments and told WTOP that she thinks more gun control is needed.

“Over here, people have very easy access to guns. I lived in Europe for some time and … guns [are] very rare to see on the streets,” she told WTOP.

Artem Ziberov was an active member of Boy Scout Troop 489. His former scoutmaster, Karl Moline, told WTOP in an email that Ziberov was “an outstanding young man, always cheerful and ready to help.”

“While he was generally pretty reserved, he had a great sense of humor and enjoyed being around his fellow scouts and the Troop’s adult leaders. Troop 489’s leaders and families are all devastated by the loss of Artem, and extend our deepest sympathies to his family,” Moline wrote.

Detectives urge anyone who may have information to contact the Major Crimes Division at 240-773-5070. For those who wish to remain anonymous, Crime Solvers of Montgomery County is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for any information that leads to arrests. Submit a tip to Montgomery County Crime Solvers on their website. Tipsters can also call Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477).

Probably to see what caliber bullets were involved....if they're all the same.

And angles, to see whether they were all from same side/direction.  And examine the skin for powder burns and to see whether the skin has bubbled up and separated from underlying tissue, indicating the muzzle was against the skin (along with other indications), etc.  An autopsy isn't just to determine cause of death.

The audio still haunts me.   Especially the little delay at the end, before the last 6-7 shots.   Coup de grace?

No wonder the police strongly suggested they not see the body.

yup.

I'm no audio engineer, but it sounds like more than one assailant.
Magazines over 10 rounds are forbidden in MD, iirc. Over 20 shots and either the mag(s) aren't legal, or more than one shooter. Twenty or more shots into two guys sounds like someone was very angry at them, for whatever reason.

A delay before more shots at the end may mean they had to reload. I can't play the sound file on this machine.

Arrests made in double murder of Montgomery Co. teens

GAITHERSBURG, MD (WUSA9) - Montgomery County Police have arrested multiple people for the shooting deaths of two Northwest High School students, 17-year-old Shadi Adi Najjar and 18-year-old Artem S. Ziberov.

The teens were shot in Montgomery Village the night before their high school graduation on June 5.

Three men were arrested in connection to the case: 25-year-old Jose Ovilson Canales-Yanez, 19-year-old Roger Garcia and 24-year-old Edgar Garcia-Gaona.

All three were charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.

"What a relief," said Adi Najjar, the father of one of the boys.

Horrible; in ways, it reads very similar to a case of double-murder in Colorado Springs in the last few months.

Police: 3 men arrested in fatal shooting of 2 Germantown teens
By Teta Alim

Shadi Adi Najjar, 17, and Artem S. Ziberov, 18, were fatally shot on the eve of their graduation from Northwest High School in Germantown, Maryland.

Two Northwest High School students — Shadi Adi Najjar, 17, and Artem S. Ziberov, 18 — were found dead inside a car in the area of Montgomery Village on the night of June 5. Police said earlier this week that they had recovered 30 shell casings from multiple caliber of weapons at the scene.

Now, the latest in the investigation reveals that Najjar’s death may have been in retaliation for a “drug-related robbery,” Montgomery County police Chief Tom Manger said in a press conference Saturday night.

But, the police chief said, “At this time, it is unknown if there is a motive for killing Ziberov or if his death was incidental to the killing of Najjar.”

Manger said police have arrested three men:

    Edgar Garcia-Gaona, 24, of Gaithersburg;
Roger Garcia, 19, of Germantown; and
Jose Ovilson Canales-Yanez, 25, of Gaithersburg.

They have all been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, the police chief said.

Manger went through the details police have gathered so far in their investigation.

On the night of the June 5 fatal shooting, police found Najjar and Ziberov in a blue Honda Civic with the lights on and engine still running in the 8200 block of Gallery Court. They were killed hours before their high school graduation.

Najjar’s cellphone was removed from the car by a suspect, Manger said.

It was Najjar’s friend who told police the 17-year-old may have been involved in a drug-related robbery late last year or earlier this year. The friend received Najjar’s last communication before his death, saying he was planning to sell graduation tickets to Roger Garcia, Manger said. It is possible this was a ruse to get the teen to the location where he was killed, according to police.

Investigators then interviewed Roger Garcia, who said he did not know either Najjar or Ziberov. He also said he did not buy graduation tickets from them. He did say, however, that he went to Northwest High School, Manger said.

Police then learned that Edgar Garcia-Gaona was Roger Garcia’s brother, and Jose Ovilson Canales-Yanez identified himself as Garcia-Gaona’s friend. And it was Canales-Yanez’s then-girlfriend who had reported a robbery to police, Manger said.

His girlfriend at the time claimed in the report that a blue Honda Civic had approached her while she was walking when someone in the car grabbed her iPad and dragged her for about 50 feet, Manger said.

“It’s believed this was the robbery that Najjar, the victim in the homicide, was rumored to have participated in,” Manger added.

Police executed a search warrant at Garcia-Gaona’s residence in Gaithersburg Saturday. Manger said detectives found a partial box of .40-caliber ammunition, and that 11 out of the 30 shell casings recovered at the crime scene were similar to those found at the residence.

Manger said the investigation is still ongoing. Police believe there are additional sources who have not yet come forward and encourage those with more information to contact them.

This reminds me of three honor students who were shot/murdered in Newark, NJ a decade ago because the perps wanted an iPhone. All three were attending college on scholarships.

It was made into episodes of Law and Order and Law and Order CI.

The brother of the girl who claimed she was dragged about 50 feet by a blue Honda while Shadi, or his passenger took hold of her ipad....plotted this execution.

The Shadi everybody knew would NEVER have been involved in stealing somebody's i-pad.   And yet...three Hispanic Dreamers believed otherwise.  To the point of firing over 30 bullets.

Shadi was hit four times.   His friend was hit 10 times.

Stupid guys....thinking that by taking Shadi's cellphone from his body before they left the scene that they could get rid of evidence of any communication.

His father pays the cellphone bill and can obtain complete records of all calls and texts in cases like this.

The police were able to 'see' exactly who Shadi was to meet and the 'reason'.

One might wonder...would the perps have gone thru with this had they realized there was digital evidence pointing the finger right at him/them?

Yeah, a relief in one sense, disturbing in another.  I'm sorry, @DCPatriot.

There's a lot more to this that the police aren't releasing.  They'll be using it to play the suspects off one another, and to build their case.  I don't see it going well for the weasels, assuming they're guilty.

One has to wonder whether Mr. Najjar was the actual perp in the iPad incident (and what is the drug connection??), and whether Mr. Ziberov was involved at all or just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and needed to be eliminated as a witness.  The way the crime is described, it sounds like they suspected him, too.
