White House won't rule out trying to block Comey testimony
By Jordan Fabian - 06/02/17 02:25 PM EDT

The White House on Friday would not rule out invoking executive privilege to try to block fired FBI Director James Comey from testifying before Congress about his conversations with President Trump.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said the hearing with Comey, scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m., must be “reviewed” by the White House counsel’s office before a decision is made.

“I have not spoken to counsel yet. I don’t know how they’re going to respond,” he said.

@corbe

Nope. It's never a good idea to just lay down and take it when being attacked. You fight back using whatever tools you have. The worse thing Trump can do is let those professional criminals in the DNC and RNC smell blood in the water.

Bad idea because it won't gain anything and will just make Trump look like he has something criminal to hide.

You're right about that. They'll be on him like jackals if he falters.

What's to wonder...if they had ANYTHING, it would have leaked long ago. Not to mention a number of Senators have had full briefings and ALL who've commented have said the President is not under investigation. Period. Its all bluster to knock the legislative agenda off track. If I'm the President, he throw Exec Privilege all over this thing and let Mueller sort it all out...and let the media scream. Their histrionics are already wearing thin, so the more they frantically proclaim a scandal...while zero evidence is presented...the more ridiculous they look.

@ConservativeGranny

Of COURSE he has something to hide. In 21st Century American,EVERYONE has something to hide. Even you are guilty of things you don't know about,so what are the chances of a Billionaire businessman not being guilty of something?

AFAIK he is not guilty of treason,and this puts him head and shoulders above most career politicians.

If there is nothing to hide, then why not let him testify and put an end to it?  Throwing up executive privilege doesn't put an end to it, it prolongs it.

@Oceander

Because it would establish a Presidential Precedent and establish that he or any other president would HAVE to answer bogus charges like this,thereby preventing Trump or any other President from being Presidential because they would have no time to do anything but prepare to testify.

AND.......,this is America. NOBODY,especially not a President,has to do or say anything in response to any charges unless subpoenaed to do so by a Grand Jury. Even then Presidents have the same rights as anyone else to plead the 5th.

Not that this would apply. No grand jury in the nation has the authority to subpoena a sitting president. Congress is the only one with that authority.

Wrong person.

Letting Comey speak to Congress has nothing to do with whether Trump can be compelled to speak to Congress.

The point under discussion is whether Trump should try to shut down Comey by claiming executive privilege, not whether Trump himself should try to avoid speaking to Congress by claiming privilege.

If Trump wants to prolong the idiocy and give the left and the democrats that much more ammunition to use against him, then he can try to shut Comey down with executive privilege.  So be it; I never expected much from him anyway and my expectations are confirmed daily.

Comey doesn't exactly have a reputation for being truthful.  And, lying to Congress is apparently no longer a crime.

Has the bar been lowered that far now? I don't know if he is guilty of anything but there are enough questions and indications that there is likely something that went on that should not have either with his staff or himself. I would like to know one way or another. There was a long long list of things that Obama should have been investigated for and nothing was done. That is no excuse to keep continuing to make the same mistakes over and over again. It seems like there is an attitude that because one president who happened to be a Dem got away with it that therefore the POTUS with an "R" after his name should be able to get away with it too. That is a path that will lead to nothing good for the US. Our standards and morality shouldn't change because of the politics of the politician.

It has been said that choosing the lesser of two evils still gets you evil. Each lesser choice after that leads to increased degrees of evil. There is no other logical conclusion. This is why the lesser of two evils is always the wrong choice.

As far as everyone being guilty of something or having something to hide that is beside the point. We all know that we are imperfect human beings and make mistakes. However when a crime has been committed do we just shrug our shoulders and say "Oh well...everyone screws up" or do we have a justice system that keeps a civil society?

Right now we are leaning towards a system where the elite and powerful are not held responsible for crimes that the ordinary citizen would go to jail for. That is not what our founding fathers intended. What we seem to have now is some kind of tribal society based on loyalty to the tribe. That is a huge step backwards and will not end well.

You just basically admitted you want to see Trump fail,so why should anyone that wants to keep the Dims and semi-Dims out of office agree with anything you have to say about the Presidency?

So? You didn't expect this? Especially after that campaign?

You are clearly right. We should continue to let the Dims get away with treason,and punish any upstart non-Dim/non-RINO politician that obtains office because THAT is the way to fix what is wrong with 'murika,huh?

Actually, the investigations should be reopened. If they have been a sham, those who failed in the performance of their duties should be prosecuted for the cover-up and obstruction of justice.
If the investigations reveal evidence of criminal behaviour, it should be prosecuted, not used as an excuse to commit more criminal behaviour.

Ever visit the real world? It's because of fools like you that we are dealing with this crap now.

Damnit, Pete, attack ideas, not people. Defeat an idea, and you have disarmed anyone who wields it. Defeat a person, and you not only create enmity, there is always another one in line.

Of course it is. The POINT is that Trump is an outsider,and because Trump done STOLEN the nomination from Lady Linsdey or JEB,we MUST punish him!

Ahhh,if we only had wunna them saintly Bush people in the WH,things would be all betta!

Come on, Linsey and JEB never got off the ground. Not even close. There were two outsiders in the race as far as the GOPe was concerned, and the two insiders they kept in long enough to wound one, and cause a lot of political enmity to point to when the Dems won, that way the RINOs would retain what power there was in the GOP. Only, damnit, the Republican won, which has created more problems for the GOPe than the Democrat winning would have. That was a cushy deal they were all cashing in on, one where it was safe to vote so the rubes back home would see how much they were doing for Troot, just us, and the Murcan way, but never any chance of those bills getting signed into law and actually messing up their profitable scam.

Now, though, there is someone in office who isn't an insider with the Party, though the Party has been leaking (my bet) like a five dollar boat to keep him as hobbled as they can, has been busy blaming Conservatives for not being able to pass a Bill they have passed before, and keeps stirring the chamber pot to keep Conservatives and Republicans at each other's throats so the old guard can step back in and resume power when the next four years are up. That's why nothing can get off Capitol Hill that has a shred of controversy attached to it, why the administration leaks, why there are has been also ran GOPers popping up and claiming to know better how to run things.

Nope, investigate, reinvestigate the Obama era investigations, and where evidence of breaking the law surfaces, prosecute any and all of the b@st@rds, and let the chips fall where they may.
How God must weep at humans' folly! Stand fast! God knows what he is doing!

"I have not spoken to counsel yet. I don’t know how they’re going to respond,” he said.

And from this the writer gets 'White House won't rule out blocking Comey testimony'. Hilarious.

Of course the white house counsel wants to review it. The white house counsel reviews EVERYTHING coming out of the white house about to be made public.
