Hanford Nuclear Reservation tunnel collapse triggers alert
Published May 09, 2017   Fox News

Hundreds of workers took cover after a tunnel in a shuttered Washington plutonium uranium extraction plant collapsed Tuesday morning.

The tunnel at the Hanford plant near Richland was full of contaminated particles, including radioactive trains that transport fuel rods, KING5 reported.

Randy Bradbury, a spokesman for the Washington state Department of Ecology, told the Associated Press there had been no release of radiation and no workers were injured.

There were no workers were in the tunnel at the time of the collapse, the AP reported.

A healthy respect for radiation?

Lyman pointed to a description of the storage tunnels from a report from the Consortium For Risk Evaluation with Stakeholder Participation in 2015 about the Hanford site, saying there is quite a lot of cesium-137 and plutonium in those tunnels. Those are radioactive materials that can cause radiation sickness and death depending on the amount and length of exposure.

Mostly decommissioned, Hanford has been a subject of controversy and conflict between state and local authorities, including a lawsuit over worker safety and ongoing cleanup delays. The site has been described in media reports as the most contaminated nuclear site in the United States.

I dunno, Savannah River might challenge them on that, though I would not doubt the assessment.

And Yucca Mountain, Nevada.

Fluor Corporation has long term contracts at both Hanford and at Savanah River.

Yucca Mountain cannot be contaminated yet. There is no spent fuel stored there, yet. Dingy Harry got it stopped when 0bama appointed one of his staffers to head the NRC, but work can get started again if Trump approves it.
