USDA to make school lunches edible again. Michelle Obama hardest hit.
posted at 10:01 am on April 29, 2017 by Jazz Shaw

With Sonny Perdue in at Agriculture you might expect him to kick things off with some changes to ethanol subsidies or President Trump’s new executive order designed to help out farmers. But he’s got something else on the menu (pardon the pun) which is long overdue and should be considerably easier to accomplish. While Barack Obama was in office there were some big changes to school lunches which were ostensibly intended to make them more nutritious, but actually wound up making them mostly inedible. (A project championed by Michelle Obama as her signature issue.) On Monday, those rules may be changing, much to the relief of students around the nation. (The Hill)

They were barely edible when I was in school on the 80s.

We had great lunches when I was in school.  We had 5 fast food places within walking distance of our open campus HS.

You have to have the right attitude. Picture all the starving children in the world and laugh. That lunch becomes a gourmet meal. Starve you little bastids---heh heh heh---nom nom nom.

So you took your gun from your truck and shot something to cook on a spit?

Our school lunches were bad enough in the 1960s and 70s. I can't imagine how atrocious they might be now. There only good thing I remember was macaroni and cheese on Fridays, which was excellent, rich and filling, and certainly off limits today; I can imagine our postmodern school administrators going into paroxysms of panic, offering group counseling sessions and reeducation training for a kitchen staff were it ever accidentally offered to our little snowflakes.

We had something way back that they called "Salisbury Steak". It wasn't from Salisbury and it wasn't steak. Instead, it appeared to be factory manufactured out of some kind of bread meal, fiber and meat of an unidentifiable source, perhaps from Churchill Downs or Aqueduct Park.

"The most terrifying force of death, comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love. They resist every impulse to fight back, knowing the forced and permanent change of life that will come from it. They know, that the moment they fight back, their lives as they have lived them, are over. -Alexander Solzhenitsyn

You were fortunate.  In my day, once the school put in a cafeteria, we weren't allowed to leave the school for lunch, nor could we bring in lunch from home.  I think that had to do with the school district obtaining federally subsidized lunches.  I believe the district had to have 100% or nearly 100% student participation to qualify.

Whatever the reason, we kids were stuck with the school lunches.  At the time, they cost 35 cents, but they didn't look like anything my mother would make.

One of the worst things I ever saw was a lunch of cornbread, green beans, and chopped hot dogs. All baked together.  I was in the second grade. Mrs. Lofthouse was standing guard at the garbage. She wasn't letting anyone leave until they had eaten all of their lunch. That was the longest three days of my life...

They were barely edible when I was in school on the 80s.
I went  to a Catholic grade school. One year my mother decided to enroll me in the school lunch program instead of having me walk half a mile home for lunch.
The food was indescribably awful.  Many of the lunches featured canned green beans which to this day the smell of induces nausea in me. Even the peanut butter looked and tasted like industrial sludge. It looked and smelled like a lot of the food was Civil War surplus.  And there were always the nuns looking over your shoulder demanding that you eat the slop because your parents had paid for it.
I begged off after a few weeks and was more than happy to eat sandwiches and apples out of a brown bag my mother prepared.
So when people complain about lousy food, I wish I could deliver to them some of the food my old grade school used to serve. Michelle's food list was probably not too good, but it probably beat the garbage they served us.

I live on the other side of the county now but its still home. In fact I was just invited out there for dinner with an old friend for her birthday.
