Trump Admits He Thought Being President ‘Would Be Easier’
By Margaret Hartmann

 April 28, 2017 4:55 am

Saturday marks President Trump’s 100th day in office, and to celebrate the occasion he got a bit too candid in an Oval Office interview with Reuters. Obviously certain elements of being president are pretty fun, but President Trump has discovered that it isn’t all playing with trucks and pressing a button that makes Cokes appear. Sometimes there’s work to be done, and as it turns out being leader of the free world is a lot harder than running a fake university and playing a caricature of a rich person on TV.

“I loved my previous life. I had so many things going,” Trump told Reuters. “This is more work than in my previous life. I thought it would be easier.”

Since we have been able to photo-document POTUS, I'd say the job ages the person 2X-3X versus normal chronologically. (during term)

I have a hard time Trump hasn't heard that before.

Sounds to me like Trump is dog-whistle signaling that he probably won't run for a 2nd term.  Being president is a full-time, grueling job (thus the grey hair every president ends up with).  Trump couldn't possibly have thought it was going to be a picnic (or a golf outing) like his previous life.  Nobody is that naïve.

Funny how so many Presidents wrote books after they left office, like the past reaching out to offer advice. He could have gone in and read what the few who held the job had to say about it to prepare himself for it and spent a bit less time tweeting.

Diminish the power of the presidency and the job will become a lot easier. A lot of that can be done unilaterally.

In the days of George Washington it was a largely ceremonial/diplomatic position. Obviously things are different today but some big moves to diminish the power of the office could be made. A rollback to a Coolidge style hands off presidency would be awesome.

@Cripplecreek

This is probably the top reason why he's feeling the way he is. In business, his word is law. Not the case when you're POTUS

It would be awesome but won't happen in today's environment, unfortunately.

Welp, to me this signals his heart isn't in it. Either he pulls an LBJ (declines a second term) or resigns.

Some harsh comments here. I'm guessing every president has encountered this at some point. The intelligence briefings, the day to day business of being president, the constant stress. I give Trump credit for admitting it. I'd be worried about anyone who said, "Oh yeah, this president gig is a piece of cake."

Honestly, I can't imagine anyone thinking the job is anything but incredibly difficult and draining.  Obama said something similar after he took office in 2009.

@Weird Tolkienish Figure

If you watch Trump, you can see that his manner is pretty subdued now.  He doesn't look like a happy man to me.  I saw a clip of him at his recent rally, and his speech/voice were nowhere near as energized as they were during the campaign.

I still think that he wanted to win a lot more than he wanted to deal with doing the job.  I think he admitted in one of his books that going from win to win was a game for him, a kind of high.

I remember Obama made a similar comment and our side mocked him relentlessly for it.

I guess a bit of consistent standards are too much to ask?

I said from the beginning that he just wanted to WIN the presidency to prove he could, then go home to Trump Tower.  I still think that.  I agree he won't run again and he wouldn't surprise me if he resigned before that.  He is out of his element.  He could do what he wanted when he wanted or do nothing.  Now, his life is structured to the max and he can't stand it.

I just had a conversation with a friend of mine which showed me that yes, it is too much to ask.

@CatherineofAragon
One of the telling moments for me when I read Barry Goldwater's memoir With No Apologies was Goldwater's
recollection of a conversation he had with Lyndon Johnson shortly before Richard Nixon assumed office. "You might
want to wish Dick well," LBJ told Goldwater. "This job is a killer."

Yeah, but 0 didn't really have much to compare it to.  I'm sure everyone's first job seems like a lot of work.
