The media was just as hostile with Ronald Reagan. The real difference is that we now have 24/7 news and social media but that doesn't mean a politician should waste a lot of time in petty fights with them.

"Conservatives" are snowflakes who need safe spaces to protect they from the evil news media.

Bush followed your advice. He was destroyed and will never recover from it.

Tell that to Gawker. I believe the whole notion that the press can say whatever they want started with Goldwater's psychological lawsuit. It's a relatively recent phenomenon and it may not last long. I can't see why the press should be exempt from liable just because they're reporting on politics. And yes I know I agree with Trump on this.

I never said that the press cannot be held as liable in any way for false reporting.  They can get their pants sued off.  They just cannot be held criminally liable.  (Perhaps the press might be held criminally liable for conspiracy unto treason, but I guess that would involve proving up an oddly different crime than lying in the media.)

Its become an excuse to avoid real issues.

Yeah, like the biggest, seriously alleged crime in the history of the Presidency:  Obama's forged Birth Certificate.  ("Oh, let's just Move On," as the DemRats and the MSM have been wont to say. "We have plenty of smaller fish to fry.")

Amen.  Rush even said that GWB's failure to use the bully pulpit to fight back is precisely what got Obama installed in the White House.

I was interested fir a while but it became obvious to anyone with half a brain that liberalo trolls were swarming all over it to manipulate the stupid. The idiots were even claiming Rick Santorum was ineligible to be president because his grandfather wasn't born here or some other stupid crap.

Considering that Bush is pretty much universally hated, it is a debatable point.

No one is saying that Tump should move to the opposite extreme...which is the cowed way W dealt with the crap the media tossed at him...however there is a grown up place in the middle of the two that is the best way to handle the MSM.

The problem is that the Trump supporters don't want the grown up way.

Yeah I know...they somehow think the way the media is being treated now is "winning!"

The media is eventually going to turn their fire on individual GOP congressmen who will then turn on Trump.

Maybe, maybe not. We have tangible evidence that the MSM was conspiring with the Rats to turn stories into propaganda pieces. It could just be that the MSM is too far gone to treat with anything more than contempt and ridicule.

The thing that strikes me as that all administrations, left and right, and even Obama included, felt that the press treated them unfairly.
I think it is obvious to us that they go after the right harder than they do the left.
However, their job is to inform us of the good, the bad, and the ugly.
I think we have reached this saturation point where everything is now a "crisis" whether it is or not, and the leads to people just getting tired of it and ignoring it all, and that could be dangerous.
Is there bad journalism? Absolutely, but there are still a few good ones.
News and editorials mix far to often.
Like Joe Friday said, "just the facts, Ma'am", would be a great place to start.
