Unfortunately, you have to be there to feed them twice daily.  If you put down food, they will eat everything that is in front of them.

Cats, on the other hand -- if you have a lot of them -- will feed themselves.  They really don't care if you leave them alone for a few days.  In fact, I do believe our eight cats and two kittens want​ us to get the heck out of here do they can do their dastardly deeds.

Dogs and cats are totally different.  I do love them both.  Still thinking about getting another Great Dane for the kitties.  They are gentle Giants and lap dogs to boot!
