I feel for you, I am in a similar situation but it is one of the pluses of living in California that there are many dog friendly rentals and establishments and we were able to find a rental in a decent area with no restrictions or monthly pet rents.

Back when I ran food there was a little kitten living on the lot that I spent months feeding and talking to to gain her trust, she looked like a Ragdoll. One day I was finally able to grab her, put her in the car and rush her home, two weeks later she gifted me with seven little imps that looked like the video, various colors of course. She was the most expensive kitty I ever had, but also devoted like a dog, even played fetch.

Been there. They look after baby elephants who've lost their mothers (usually to poachers, not always) and the odd baby rhino. The babies are so sweet - until they stand on your foot or decide you make a good scratching post  :tongue2:

Watching them with their adopted parents - it's both funny and sweet.

Oh my...I better stay away from this thread. I feel a huge case of puppy fever coming on, lol. The puppy breath is oozing thru my moniter.

This is the first time in my life I have been dogless. My last crew (6 big guys) all got old in the space of about 3 1/2 years and well...you know. The time leading up to that was so labor intensive I haven't jumped back in yet.  I would love  a pup, but usually get an older dog for all of the obvious reasons. Actually, I usually adopt whatever wanders on my property. So I guess when the good Lord decides what he wants me to have, I'll have it.

In the mean time, I have Crazy Cat to keep me company. She doesn't ask for much.

I hope you can get a kitty soon @Freya.

@berdie, I will after I recover from my next surgery January or February of next year. It wouldn't be fair to a kitty to be home alone for 4-6 weeks. It needs me.

I haven't had a kitty since December 31, 2013. I miss it. She's still with me, but not in a living way anymore.
