Actually we do understand, but this isn't a champion for patriotic Americans like Reagan. He is winning them over because he fight like this in the same way Jersey Shore won over audiences for their fights.  The Pop Culture obsessed society likes watching celebrity train wrecks.

Good catch. I always laugh when people get it wrong. Though the mental picture of milk and toast does fit.
