By ELIZABETH ROBERTS

Pope Francis today proposed that caring for the environment be added to the traditional seven works of mercy that Christians are called to perform.

The Pope took his green agenda to a new level by supplementing Jesus' call to feed the hungry, clothe the naked and visit the sick with his own call for recycling, carpooling and conserving electricity.

He said the faithful should ask forgiveness for the 'sins' against the environment that have been committed by the 'irresponsible, selfish' and profit-motivated economic and political system.

He called for all of humanity to take concrete steps to change course, starting with repaying what he called the 'ecological debt' that wealthy countries owe the poor.

'Repaying (the debt) would require treating the environments of poorer nations with care and providing the financial resources and technical assistance needed to help them deal with climate change and promote sustainable development,' he wrote.

On a smaller, individual scale, recycling, turning off the lights and carpooling can also help, he said.

Finally, he proposed that caring for the environment be added as a 'complement' to the seven spiritual and corporal works of mercy.

He made the ambitious proposal in a message to mark the church's World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, which he instituted last year in a bid to highlight his ecological concerns.

This year, the day of prayer for the planet falls during the Pope's Holy Year of Mercy, a year-long focus on the church's merciful side.

Throughout the year, the faithful have been urged to practice the seven corporal and seven spiritual works of mercy, which were first outlined in the Gospel and have been articulated over centuries by philosophers and theologians.

In addition to the corporal acts of mercy, the spiritual ones include counseling the doubtful, instructing the ignorant and praying to God for the living and dead.

Terrence Ward, author of the book 'The Guardian of Mercy' and a panelist at the Vatican launch of the new document, said the works of mercy the Pope is asking people to perform are 'not about changing the world tomorrow.'

Rather, they're about changing mindsets and performing even small actions - such as turning off the lights. Doing so, he said, shows reverence for the miracle of life and creation and actually allows for all the other works of mercy to follow.

'To give polluted water to someone who is thirsty doesn't make sense,' he said. 'Clean the water up first.'

Green Pope: Francis says wealthy countries owe an 'ecological debt' to the poor

More and more glad.....every day and in every way.....that I never went through with becoming a Catholic (ex-husband was one).  To think that I actually considered converting once.  Whew!  That was close.

This pope is looking like "the" false prophet spoken of in the Bible re: end days.  What an ironic travesty that... throughout history the Catholic Church has been targeted and persecuted by communists....and now they have appointed one to lead them.  Where he will lead them is the only question.  But I'm betting they better pack for warm....very warm....weather.

He seems as unfamiliar as Hillary Clinton with the way normal people live their lives. If he's so concerned about pollution, he might direct his comments to China.

With all due respect, not embracing Catholicism because of who the Pope is makes as much sense as not embracing conservatism because Pat Buchanan is conservative.

The Pope is not a communist and he is not a false prophet.  He has a point of view on climate change which does not bind Catholics in the least. This is not a faith issue.

And I'm not  concerned about where Francis is leading Catholics.  He's the best and most Christ-like Pope of my lifetime.

I heartily disagree.

We are Catholic. The new Priest is a hardcore SJW.. Still go to mass but as you look around you see all the people tight lipped..for now.
Attendance is way down the last few years.

Sorry....but I have to ask.  What is an "SJW"?

Half of my family are Catholics (Irish) and many of my friends are, as well.  None of them like this new pope and are, as you say....'tight-lipped' about him.

Oh, no.  Francis has been spending too much time with Patriarch Bartholomew (the "Green Patriarch" as he'd like to be styled, though he's known among Orthodox traditionalists as "Black Bart") -- ecological maunderings were the one foray into secular politics the Turks would tolerate from him, so he's been that way for years -- now Francis seems to have caught the disease, too.
And when they behead your own people in the wars which are to come, then you will know what this was all about.

How can it be a sin if there is absolutely no evidence that human activities caused climate change (assuming, arguendo, that it's changing).

Green Pope: Francis says wealthy countries owe an 'ecological debt' to the poor

What exactly is this ecological debt and why do the poor deserve it more than anyone else?  Why should wealthy countries only owe this debt, when obviously poorer countries pollute this planet as well? The statement is ridiculous and akin to the mindset of slavery reparations.

It's not a "disease." It's called the Gospel.  Matthew 25 will refresh our memories on the only thing that matters.

Jesus had a preferential option for the poor; he ministered to them and said they would be first in the Kingdom.

"To whom much is given, much is expected."

Pope Francis is imitating his namesake, Francis of Assisi, who gave away everything and ministered to the poor.  How ironic that this comes up on the weekend the Catholic Church is proclaiming the sainthood of Mother Teresa, who made her entire life about taking care of the poorest of the poor.

My 84 year old mother who is from the old country, one that was invaded by the communists and stripped (actually the second time if you count WWII), is a devout Catholic and she disagrees too. As a matter of fact just today I was discussing this subject with her and her comment was "Well he's a communist, what else would you expect". My Mom, still makes me laugh!

Is it from the parable of the wise and foolish virgins, the parable of the talents, or Our Lord's comments on the Last Judgment that you adduce support for the identification of the Gospel with the enthusiasms of the current Pope of Rome and Patriarch of Constantinople for secular "climate science" and the like?  Hitching the Gospel to scientific theories, even well-established ones like Ptolemaic celestial mechanics (hey, it did tell you where to point your telescope if you wanted to see any of the planets!) has never been a good idea.

No.  A focus on the poor comes from the mouth of Jesus himself.

Climate science is a personal opinion of the Pope and every Catholic can disagree with him if they want to.  I do.

That's sweet, the story about your mom and especially your comment that she still makes you laugh.  Good for you, honoring your mother with that attitude.
Just repaying all she did for me plus the fact that if she had listened to her doctor when she was carrying me, she was very ill and they were pushing her to abort, I wouldn't be here to aggravate so many people.
