Did Lucky Strike go to war Red and Come back Green. Or was it the other way around?
Lucky Strike went to war in the green pack but turned white circa 1942. In fact, one of the most fabled
industrial designers of the 20th Century was responsible not only for the white background (when Lucky
Strike's president challenged him with a bet to improve the pack design), he also introduced the Lucky
Strike target logo on the back of the pack as well. Raymond Loewy collected $50,000 on the bet plus
his customary fee for the re-design.
Among other things, Raymond Loewy's designs included:
The Pennsylvania Railroad S-1 locomotive.
The original Studebaker Avanti.
1930s Sunbeam T-9 toaster.
1940 GM touring bus.
1946 Lincoln Continental.
1954 GM Scenicruiser bus.
1939 Sunbeam Mixmaster. (This design stayed with one or two modifications
until 1950.)
1957 Sunbeam Mixmaster. (Made and sold through 1967.)
1953 Studebaker Starliner coupe.
Air Force One livery.
And these company logos . . .
