British woman, 21, killed in Australian backpackers' hostel attack by knifeman 'shouting Allahu Akbar'

A Frenchman in Australia killed a 21-year-old British woman and wounded a 30-year-old British man at a backpacker hostel in the state of Queensland, reportedly yelling “Allahu Akbar” while attacking the pair with a knife.

The woman, named locally as Mia Ayliffe-Chung, from Derbyshire, was described as "gorgeous" by friends.

Police arrested the 29-year-old French traveller and were investigating whether the “senseless” attack was motivated by Islamic extremism. 

Monique Cross, an Australian friend of Miss Ayliffe-Chung, said: "She was a gorgeous person. It's an awful tragedy - I can't believe it."

Police confirmed witness reports that the killer yelled “Allahu Akbar” – Arabic for “God is greater” – during the attack and as he was arrested.

A 30-year-old British man was also severely injured in the attack, near Townsville, in Queensland.

The stabbing took place at Shelley's Backpackers in Home Hill - a small town which is popular among travellers looking to do agricultural work, such as fruit picking.

A young British woman died and a man was critically injured when a French national allegedly stabbed three people while saying "Allahu Akbar" at an Australian backpacker's hostel, police said Wednesday.

Police are investigating the murder, which occurred late Tuesday in Home Hill, a rural town south of Townsville in far north Queensland state, but could not say whether the alleged attacker had been radicalised.

It will be interesting to see if the culprit was of some sort of Arabic background.

The media is describing the Muslim terrorist as a French man. Because if it's anything the French are known for, it's shouting "Allahu Akbar". and stabbing random non-Muslims.

    A French national allegedly shouted “Allahu akbar” during and after a stabbing attack that left a British woman dead and another Briton fighting for his life at a backpackers hostel outside of Townsville last night.

    Possible extremist motivations for the attack are now being investigated by Queensland Police and the Australian Federal Police, with the man yet to be questioned by investigators.

    Queensland Police Service Deputy Commissioner Steve Gollschewski said the 29 -year-old French man shouted the phrase following the attack at the hostel at Home Hill, south of Townsville, but police had not determined whether the incident was terror related.
