Yes, the System Is Rigged

By Patrick J. Buchanan

“I’m afraid the election is going to be rigged,” Donald Trump told voters in Ohio and Sean Hannity on Fox News. And that hit a nerve.

“Dangerous,” “toxic,” came the recoil from the media.

Trump is threatening to “delegitimize” the election results of 2016.

Well, if that is what Trump is trying to do, he has no small point. For consider what 2016 promised and what it appears about to deliver.

This longest of election cycles has rightly been called the Year of the Outsider. It was a year that saw a mighty surge of economic populism and patriotism, a year when a 74-year-old Socialist senator set primaries ablaze with mammoth crowds that dwarfed those of Hillary Clinton.

It was the year that a non-politician, Donald Trump, swept Republican primaries in an historic turnout, with his nearest rival an ostracized maverick in his own Republican caucus, Senator Ted Cruz.

What a silly column.  Trump is barreling towards a blowout, and Pat thinks his rabble band is in a position to dictate to the rest of the population.

Buchanan and Schlafley have lost their marbles.

I read the entire article.  Pat said: "Instructions are going out to Republican leaders that either they dump Trump, or they will cease to be seen as morally fit partners in power."

That is hog wash.  It is the Republican candidates themselves who are staying away from Trump as they know he is toxic for their election.  They won't be asking for his endorsement.

Trump yelling the election will be rigged means he doesn't know how elections happen - he sounds like there is some group of people who can grab the election process and cause him to lose.   Let's examine how elections happen for real:

ALL ELECTIONS ARE LOCAL:  You live in a county or parish.  You have a county clerk or election administrator who has the responsibility to put together the general election.  Remember this is YOUR county/parish.  You elected the county clerk and your county commissioners, whom you elected, hired the election administrator if you have one.  Your state has election laws and your county clerk or election administrator has to go by those laws to hold an election in your county.  Trump is not coming to your county to hold the election and neither is Clinton.  It is YOUR county people holding the election.  Every election judge in your county lives there, not in New York.  You have a Republican County Chairman and a Democrat County Chairman.  They live in your county.  You elected the Republican County Chairman.

Now, I could explain in detail how your county election works if you go to a poll to vote but I won’t go through that detail.  I can’t explain your process if you live in a state that votes on line or one that now has all voting by mail.  My point is, it is your county who votes and your officials you elected that run those elections.  If you had wanted, you could have told your Republican Chairman you wanted to be an election judge and you could have taken that training to do that.  You could tell your Republican County Chairman you want to be a “poll watcher” at your election and you could have taken training to do that.

If you live in Texas, every county (and other states that have poll voting) has a central counting station at your county courthouse.  That is where the results from each precinct come to be totaled.  In every Texas county, the results are counted according to a law my husband and I wrote.  Before we wrote that law, if the county clerk or election administrator was a Democrat, he/she could keep out the opposing party in the central counting station and if that person was a Republican, he/she could do the same.  Our county had a Democrat county clerk and she would not let anyone of our Republican Party in that station where the votes were counted.  So,we wrote a law which was passed unanimously by our State House and Senate that details who can be in the central counting station and what the duties are of everyone in there.  Now, each party has officials in there.  We wanted the counting station to be fair to both parties.

You can talk to your Republican County Chair about the election in your county/parish.  Ask him/her about the process in your county.  Get information before you assume someone in New York is running your election.

About electronic voting machines – I know about those machines as I was in our county when they were put in and my husband was the Republican County Chair and we held every Republican Primary election for ten years.  I also taught election law around Texas and they used voting machines.  You will hear from others that those machines are “rigged”.  Here is actually how those machines are used:

1.  These machines are not connected to the internet.  They are separate counting machines – that is what they do, count and that is all they can do.
2.  There are election laws that determine how these machines are kept safe.  They are programmed.  Then, the Republican County Chair and the Democrat County Chair meet with the county clerk or election administrator and each machine is checked for accuracy.  When the machines pass that test, they are locked in a room.  The county clerk or election administrator has a key to that room and it requires two keys to open that room.  The other key is kept by the Sheriff or if he is on the ballot, the county judge has the other key.
3.  On election day, the sheriff and his deputies deliver the machines to the voting precinct.  The election judge who is of one party and the assistant judge who is of the other party, check each machine for accuracy before voting starts.
4.  It is possible a machine may screw up.  If a voter says the machine didn’t record his/her vote correctly, it is put out of commission then so no mistake keeps going and the voter uses another machine.
5. No one can change the vote of a machine after a person votes.  The reason is, there is a duplicate record of the votes inside the machine and no one can get to that except an official from the voting machine company.  If for some reason, there is a question about that machine total, that internal record is there.

Sounds like Trump is trying to reuse the same tactic he used on the GOP.  If you stop me I'll vote for the other guy routine.  But the problem is this is the last election so his existing playbook isn't going to work.  Or it's like many said during the primary...Trump is only here to get Hillary elected.  Anyone else would have easily beaten Hillary--even Kasich!

After the election is over, the press will ask Trump who he voted for.

And the answer will be, "Hillary."
