Gingrich 'strongly' endorses McCain

By Harper Neidig

Former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) on Thursday threw his support behind Sen. John McCain two days after Donald Trump declined to endorse the Arizona Republican.

"I strongly endorse Sen. John McCain," Gingrich said in a video put out by the McCain campaign, "a genuine American hero, a man who has endured a great deal for his country, and a man who I work with and watch him provide leadership as Chairman of the Armed Services Committee.”

McCain, who is in a tough reelection race this year and faces a primary election this month, had issued a lengthy statement on Monday condemning the GOP presidential nominee's criticism of the parents of a Muslim U.S. soldier who was killed while serving in Iraq.

"In recent days, Donald Trump disparaged a fallen soldier's parents. He has suggested that the likes of their son should not be allowed in the United States — to say nothing of entering its service," the senator, a prisoner during the Vietnam War, said in the statement.

"I cannot emphasize enough how deeply I disagree with Mr. Trump's statement. I hope Americans understand that the remarks do not represent the views of our Republican Party, its officers, or candidates."

The next day Trump, who had considered tapping Gingrich as his running mate, would not offer an endorsement of McCain when asked in an interview with The Washington Post.

In an apparent effort to close the rift between the two camps, Trump’s running mate, Mike Pence, met with McCain on Tuesday.

McCain said in a statement Thursday: "I am honored to receive the endorsement of Speaker Gingrich, a long-time friend and leader in the Republican Party. Throughout his career, Newt has been a strong voice for conservative principles. I appreciate his support and I look forward to campaign ahead.”

That's the "bad Newt" talking...

Neither Trump nor Pence will endorse McCain and Ayotte.  But don't worry.  Trump really cares about the Supreme Court.

I don't like McCain but I did (unwillingly) vote for him. He was put up as the candidate because he was a faithful party hack and it was "his turn," as it had been with Dole.  However, even though I disliked him, he would have been better than Obama by a long shot.

The problem now is that nobody can say that Trump would be better than Hillary or any other contender, because, quite frankly, I think we have our first total lunatic running for the Oval Office.

Normally, an effective political party would have stopped him immediately. The problem is that we don't have an effective political party.

It's a no-brainer, voting for McCain or Dole or Trump for the presidency.  Romney too.

Rumor has it that he was asked to be part of the intervention of the Donald but he is still butt hurt over not being asked to be VP.

I thought I had read he is leading Trump's transition team.  :silly:

Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly, do not claim to be wiser than you are.  Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.  If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all…do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Team Trump cannot even get a simple unified front within its own ranks.

Has anyone heard from Jeff Sessions after he prostituted himself at the convention?
