A North Korean border guard died from his wounds in a rock-throwing attack while on patrol last Sunday near the border town of Hyesan in Ryanggang Province.

Radio Free Asia reported Friday that a group consisting of at least two suspects pelted two guards with stones several times, leaving one dead and the other unconscious. Their weapons were found left on the site, the U.S.-based media said.

Pyongyang has been on emergency alert since the attack ― searching the area for the suspects, but it has not identified any of them yet.

Smugglers, who are the likely suspects... plus, their border guards main mission is to keep people from getting out.

Would they have been trying to get out?

smugglers and escapees don't generally attack the guards, they avoid them or bribe them

Border guards in North Korea are there to keep the North Koreans in.
