Donald Trump Sees Trade Plan Resulting in Better Jobs, Higher Prices

By REID J. EPSTEIN

Jun 30, 2016 5:36 pm ET

Donald Trump on Thursday said his trade proposals would mean better jobs for American workers and higher prices for U.S. consumers.

Speaking at a shuttered factory in Manchester, N.H., Mr. Trump reiterated large segments of the trade speech he made Tuesday, reading from notes the steps he would take to pull out of the North American Free Trade Agreement and the Trans-Pacific Partnership while formally labeling China a currency manipulator.

But for the first time the presumptive Republican presidential nominee said that the effects of his policies would be to drive up prices for American consumers, which he said would be worthwhile if it meant manufacturing jobs are relocated from abroad back to the U.S.

“We’re better off paying a little bit more and having jobs,” Mr. Trump said. “It was a much better system, the way it used to be.”
Mr. Trump added that it would be better for the U.S. economy if products cost more and more Americans were employed.

“A lot of people say, ‘Oh, well the goods will be cheaper, they’ll come in and they’ll be cheaper,’ ” Mr. Trump said. “Yeah, but we lost all our jobs. So we’re better off if they’re not quite as cheap and the goods will also be of a higher quality, because we do a higher quality good and we’re known for that. But all of a sudden, the jobs are gone and frankly, the goods can come in cheaply, but people don’t have any money to buy them, and that’s a problem.”

Mr. Trump’s call for Americans to pay more for goods manufactured domestically comes in the midst of constant criticism from Democrats that the GOP standard bearer has spent his career profiting by making Trump-branded products overseas.

Presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton on Tuesday noted that Trump-branded golf shirts are made in Bangladesh. Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown this week noted that another of Mr. Trump’s clothing line is made in Mexico, his furniture line is manufactured in Turkey and his picture frames are produced in India.

“He’s never in his own business said, ‘We should find a way to make these things here,” Mr. Brown said in a conference call with reporters arranged by Mrs. Clinton’s campaign. “The reality is Donald Trump lines his pockets at the expense of American workers

This is such a con.  "The way it used to be" was less productive, fewer people could afford many items that are now featured at Wal-Mart, and unions soaked entire industries with the very deals that forced businesses to offshore.

Trump has NEVER been "America First."  He's offshored all of his goods for years to cheap manufacturing and became a protectionist when he saw an opening with lefties.

Unfortunately for him, those lefties don't believe him and will vote for Hillary.  Meanwhile, he'll lose Republicans like me who believe you can't turn back the clock on free trade.

Just imagine, if Trump were president in the late 70's the big 3 car manufactures might still be king...

Just think of the fine cars, premium prices and wealthy unions we'd have today...

Ya, thanks, but no thanks...

Everyone supporting this charade are chumps for Trump.

3 years ago Trump wrote this Op-Ed which is the EXACT OPPOSITE of his position today, which is identical to Bernie Sanders' and Hillary's Trade Policies.

Donald Trump in 2013: 'Leave borders behind and go for global unity'
http://edition.cnn.com/2013/01/22/business/opinion-donald-trump-europe/

Snip:

I've long been a believer in the "look at the solution, not the problem" theory. In this case, the solution is clear. We will have to leave borders behind and go for global unity when it comes to financial stability.
Is this possible? Is this a new frontier? Yes and no. There is the fait accompli strategy -- stay under the radar -- and the passive aggressive strategy, acts of terror used to paralyze and so on -- so the bottom line must be balance. Rationality must rule. There are philosophical approaches to economics. However, at this point, we don't so much need philosophy as we need action. Which way to proceed is the question.

...The future of Europe, as well as the United States, depends on a cohesive global economy. All of us must work toward together toward that very significant common goal.

Fart for freedom, fart for liberty and fart proudly.  - Benjamin Franklin

...Obsta principiis—Nip the shoots of arbitrary power in the bud, is the only maxim which can ever preserve the liberties of any people. When the people give way, their deceivers, betrayers and destroyers press upon them so fast that there is no resisting afterwards. The nature of the encroachment upon [the] American constitution is such, as to grow every day more and more encroaching. Like a cancer, it eats faster and faster every hour." - John Adams, February 6, 1775

The spin Meisters of the Trump Militant ought to be along shortly to explain away what Trump wrote 3 years ago and translate for us what Trump really meant behind the plain meaning of the words.

I wonder if the Trump people you are referring to are lawyers. They are often pretty creative in twisting the meaning of plain words to achieve their ends.

Suggesting they might be lawyers isn't a "personal attack" rule violation is it?
