Beijing is sinking by up to 11 centimetres each year because of a loss of groundwater, according to the latest report on an environmental problem that affects scores of China’s fast-developing cities.

The new study uses satellite imagery to show that the most developed parts of the Chinese capital are sinking and buckling at a rate of 4.3 inches (11 centimetres) every twelve months.

The phenomenon carries public safety risks, particularly for the country’s train network.

The US has areas where we're "mining" the groundwater,  also...using it up far faster than it is replenished by infiltration.
