Beijing is sinking by up to 11 centimetres each year because of a loss of groundwater, according to the latest report on an environmental problem that affects scores of China’s fast-developing cities.The new study uses satellite imagery to show that the most developed parts of the Chinese capital are sinking and buckling at a rate of 4.3 inches (11 centimetres) every twelve months.The phenomenon carries public safety risks, particularly for the country’s train network.
