Vice President Joe Biden plans to criticize Donald Trump’s ideas on foreign policy and his plan to build a wall on the United States Southern border.
“If we build walls and disrespect our closest neighbors, we will quickly see all this progress disappear, replaced by a return of anti-Americanism and a corrosive rift throughout our hemisphere,” Biden will say later today, according to excerpts of the speech released by the Vice President’s office.
Biden’s speech will be delivered at the Center for New American Security, and he’ll criticize the “sound bite solutions” offered by politicians like Trump “in a world defined by complexity.”
In spite of decades in a leadership role in Congress, the Vice President’s record on foreign policy is particularly thin.
“I think he has been wrong on nearly every major foreign policy and national security issue over the past four decades,” Obama’s former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates famously wrote about Biden in 2014.
But Biden will warn that Trump could threaten America’s fragile leadership in the world, which he’ll say shouldn’t be taken for granted.
“I’ve never been more optimistic about America’s capacity to lead our world to a more peaceful and prosperous future,” he will say, according to excerpts obtained by the L.A. Times. “But our leadership does not spring from some inherent American magic — it never has.”
Biden will also condemn Trump’s proposed temporary ban on allowing Muslims into the United States, warning that it could fuel Muslim extremism and alienate the “vast majority” of peaceful Muslims.
“Proposals to ban Muslims from entering the United States or slandering entire religious communities as complicit in terrorism call into question America’s status as the greatest democracy in the history of the world,” he will say.
