 Reid unloads: McConnell ‘cuddled up’ with Trump

In a POLITICO interview, the outgoing Democratic leader says he’ll spend the next five months making GOP candidates eat Trump’s words.

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Harry Reid says the public knows plenty about Donald Trump, and there’s nothing he could do to make the presumptive GOP nominee more unpopular than he already is.

So rather than becoming the Trump attack dog, as he was against Mitt Romney four years ago, Reid sees his charge as something different this time: to make Mitch McConnell and Senate GOP incumbents eat Trump’s endless stream of divisive statements.

It’s the key, the outgoing Democratic leader said in an extensive interview with POLITICO here Wednesday, to returning the Senate to his party’s control — the final, legacy-making fight of his three-decade Senate career.

Mitch McConnell: I have ‘no trouble’ backing Donald Trump, but he should be more ‘boring’

He nevertheless preached the importance of coming together behind Trump. Conservative pundit Bill Kristol said last weekend that there will be a strong third-party candidate for those who oppose both Trump and Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton.

“I think [a third-party run] just makes it more likely Hillary Clinton gets elected president. I would not want it said of me that I participated in the election of Hillary Clinton,” McConnell said, when asked about Kristol’s plans. “I hope it is not successful.”
