Gov. Gary Johnson, the Libertarian Party candidate for president, said that he agrees with 73 percent of what Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) says, citing that libertarians agree with socialism as long as it’s voluntary.

On Tuesday, a caller from Arkansas on CSPAN’s Washington Journal questioned Johnson about Sanders, saying that people she knows want Sanders to win the nomination. She suggested that Johnson and Sanders could sit down together.

This was after she called Johnson a Republican, and Johnson said he wanted to “draw a line of distinction” between being a Republican and being a Libertarian.

The LP saw a chance for a big move, and are blowing it left and right.

Dear Mr. Johnson,

Socialism, almost by definition, is not voluntary.  If it were, it would be called charity.

So right. I had considered voting Libertarian but they are way too socially liberal and now apparently socialist to boot. I cannot do it.

If Johnson is going to win states without being a spoiler, he has to sell his spending reductions to disaffected conservatives and civil liberties to the Sanders people.  Unless Trump implodes and winds up with 5% of the vote, there is no path for a traditional conservative to win in 2016.

When you look at a lot of the positions of Sanders and Trump there is a lot of overlap and common ground between them, perhaps not on all the specifics or on the details, but on the general gist, especially on trade/protectionism and pharmaceutic companies and pharmaceutic drugs price controls, on minimum wage, expansion of Medicare and the VA, etc.  I’m not sure of the % but Trump and Sanders are not that far apart on several issues.

I wrote about it here:

http://www.gopbriefingroom.com/index.php/topic,203243.msg859841.html#msg859841

That being said, I don’t care for Gary Johnson, never have and much preferred Austin Petersen.

So now it comes down to writing in Petersen or SMOG or Cthulhu or just staying home on election day and getting rip roaring drunk while watching the election returns.

The truly depressing thing is what this election says about America and her electorate in 2016.

It's really hard to read posts from flaming leftists in the usual media stinkholes and find oneself unable to honestly disagree with their assessments of the GOP nominee.

On the radio yesterday they played excerpts from Gary from the Libertarian debate, and he is not conservative in any stretch of the imagination. Wants to make it far easier and faster for immigrants to enter the country so they don't have to come in illegally, is his answer for the border.

I'm looking somewhere else for my non-Trump candidate

Yeah! He is making it really difficult for me to pull the lever for him as well.

I watched both of the Libertarian debates moderated by John Stossel on FBC.  From what I saw, Johnson is not even a Libertarian by any stretch of the imagination especially when it comes to property rights and freedom of association.  Johnson was IIRC all for forcing say a Christian baker or caterer to be forced by the federal government to provide services against and contrary to their religious beliefs.  He’s also in favor of more gun controls and federal funding of Planned Parenthood and of affirmative action.

Johnson was in fact so bad on issues of basic constitutional liberty and freedom of association and property and gun rights, that even John McAfee came off looking saner and better by comparison.

Seriously. How liberal and insane does one have to be when John McAfee comes off as being more reasoned.

Yep. A lot of people were hoping for Austin Petersen who comes across as a Reagan conservative compared to Johnson. He did give him a good race, forcing it to a second vote. He just wasn't as established.

Gary Johnson is going to pull in the Sanders supporters.
This will help Trump a lot.

However, there is only one party for conservatives:
The Constitution Party.

Are you casting an anti-Clinton vote, rather than a pro-Trump vote?
With Sanders voters going to Gary Johnson, perhaps you can afford to vote like a true conservative AND not support Clinton AND send a message to the GOP that it cannot ignore its conservative base.

Consider voting for the Constitution Party.

I took the test.
I side with Bernie Sanders 1% of the time.
Turns out Bernie Sanders doesn't like Common Core either.

I side with the Constitution Party 98% of the time

There must be good money in being a perpetual candidate that sets out to lose. Other than that I have no idea what could motivate, or explain, this guy.

The problem is, Petersen was little more than a glorified Internet troll. The LP went with Johnson because he had a history of being elected in a swing state—for once, pragmatism overrode (I wanted to say another word but that would've been a dumb pun) ideology, the one election where an ideologically strong candidate was desperately needed. It was a gross miscalculation on the LP's part.

Either that, or the big-L Libertarians are reverting to form of intentionally losing, then complaining about how the election process is unfair.

I will say this much: even as a de facto Democrat on his fiscal and social policies, Johnson is more sane than Trump or Clinton. Let that sink in for a minute.
