Sunday, May 29, 2016 03:52 PM

Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson won the Libertarian nomination for president on Sunday, though it took two ballots, Reason.com reports.

Johnson also was the party's 2012 nominee.

He took 49.5 percent of the votes on the first ballot, which required a 50 percent-plus majority. Libertarian activist Austin Petersen was second with 21.3 percent and software developer John McAfee was  third with 14.1 percent.

The second ballot removed sixth-place finisher Kevin McCormick, giving Johnson 55.8 percent of the vote on the second ballot.
