Weekly Standard to Trump: Name Cabinet and GOP Will Fall Into Line
Tuesday, May 24, 2016 04:40 PM

By: Bill Hoffmann

Donald Trump could quickly gain more Republican support if he announced who the members of his inner cabinet will be, says David Gelernter, a Yale professor and contributing editor to The Weekly Standard.

"For all the GOP's anguish, Trump could turn things around tomorrow if he chose. A Trump presidency will come down to the people around him," David Gelernter writes in The Standard’s May 30th issue.

"Trump ought to tell us, now, who his close advisers and inner cabinet will be. Unless he does that, there is no telling how he will govern.

"But if he made the announcement and did it right (having convinced his chosen advisers to work with him for the good of the country), he could win over nearly all Republicans by the next day."

Gelernter — a professor of computer science at Yale University and author of "Tides of Mind: Uncovering the Spectrum of Consciousness," published by Liveright — isn’t sure that’s in the cards for the presumptive GOP presidential candidate.

"Will Trump do anything like this? Name his advisers and run as a grown up? Everything about him says no, except this: He wants desperately to win," Gelernter writes.

"And this announcement would be the sort of dramatic, unexpected gesture he loves. So
don't put it past him. It could happen."

  • WE are NOT ok!
Not a Trump fan, but I disagree.  Now is not the time to show his hand to Hillary.
I Believe in the United States of America as a Government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a democracy in a republic; a sovereign nation of many sovereign states; a perfect union one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.  I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it; to support its Constitution; to obey its laws to respect its flag; and to defend it against all enemies.

A good VP choice (not suggestion or possibility) but a selection could give me a very small justification for pulling the lever for Trump in November. I am still #probablynotTrump,

I mostly agree that announcing his cabinet picks would go a long way to win over the holdouts. The problem is that he hasn't had enough time to vet everyone he'd need to name and any trouble with one of them could be a detriment to his campaign.

I can already predict two...Christie as his AG...Carson as Surgeon General.

Weekly Standard to Trump: Name Cabinet and GOP Will Fall Into Line

The GOP was always going to fall in line. they are just doing an expanded version of the same old same old Kabuki theater they do every election. Put on a show throughout, make a lot of noise and cave in at the end. It's what they do with Dems, and it's what they do with their voters to keep the cash and votes flowing.

History is crystal clear. No matter how unpopular/repulsive the liberal, they get behind them. See Mitt Romney and Bhoner and Mitch and Ryan and Cochran and McCain and many more for details.

Trump supporters really have nothing to worry over from the GOP. The only concern is will enough principled conservatives flush their beliefs to win.

Of course the mere fact that anyone has to abandon conservatism to vote for this guy doesn't seen to upset many on the right.

I really don't like or trust Trump but I'm going to vote for him because of who he chose as his Secretary of the Treasury...said no voter ever.

Surgeon General is not a cabinet post and Carson has said he doesn't want a position in a Trump administration.

I know it's not.  Still my prediction.  And to be accurate...Carson said he doesn't want a cabinet position.

Hence the reason I said he'll be appointed to be the Surgeon General and work over at HHS.

So he doesn't want to be vice president and he doesn't want a cabinet position but he's will to dwell in obscurity as the Surgeon General?  Really?

Surgeon General at times has been a position to promote certain health and medical issues.  For a doctor of his caliber and skill why wouldn't he want that job?

There are a lot of good things he could prmote and push from there.

Because he ran for president.  His ego is near the size of Trump's.  He doesn't want to go forth and do good things; he wanted to run things.  But hey, the job comes with a nifty uniform so maybe that's why he'd take it.

The only choice that really matters is the VP selection.  In most cases, that selection is not particularly vote altering, though it seemed to significantly help McCain.
