Is China Massing Troops Along North Korea’s Border?

On Saturday, North Korea test fired a submarine based ballistic missile off the east coast of the Korean Peninsula. Though the missile only traveled 19 miles, which has led South Korean officials to deem the test a failure, the test is the most successful to date. The US military tracked a previous submarine launch on April 14th, which didn’t appear to reach flight at all.

Prior to the launch, multiple international news agencies reported that 2,000 Chinese soldiers were massing along the border with North Korea, in anticipation of a possible 5th nuclear test (which hasn’t happened). China’s Defense Ministry vehemently denied the claim, saying “The relevant report does not accord with the facts…the Chinese military maintains normal combat readiness and training on the China-North Korea border.”

However, the idea that China may be deploying troops as an implicit threat to North Korea, is not far-fetched at all. Relations between the two countries have deteriorated significantly this year after North Korea’s last nuclear test, which led China to condemn the North and support UN sanctions against Kim Jong-un’s regime.

Shortly thereafter, a document from the Worker’s Party of North Korea was made public, which declared China an “enemy state.” It also called for a “nuclear storm” against China for its “betrayal of socialism.”

I'm surprised China hasn't annexed them a long time ago. Even though they are partners, North Korea is not an efficient partner. Their country is rich with magnesite, zinc, tungsten but they are too backwards to capitalize on that and their communist cult is too stupid to efficiently use their resources. It is like giving a uranium mine to a 2nd century band of Bedouins.

They probably don't want the regional instability of an invasion but maybe thinking that they have about 8 months left of a weak US leader, they may want to take advantage of that.

Good points.  I also think they have got enough on their plate with the South China Sea and don't want some second rate chubby dictator causing countries to send more troops to the area.

China could also probably take over NK in a matter of hours with little incident. I have a feeling they have a strategy in place, planned, and tested for decades including enough assets on the ground it wouldn't even be a challenge. They would probably have half the starving NK army welcome them.

That is true.. I don't think the NK troops will put up a fight all if it was China..

They would probably see it as a humanitarian mission instead of an invasion (at that, that's probably how China would sell it)

Reads like a "yes" to me.

China does this regularly, usually when North Korea goes too far (whish is why it's a pretty regular event).

Last year, photos were floating around of large numbers of Chinese tanks and self-propelled artillery mobilized to the NK/China border.

I'd be willing to bet they have assassins at the highest levels in NK, kind of like the muslim brotherhood in our government, willing to deflate his stomach with lead.
