NY Daily News Endorses Kasich in GOP Race

The New York Daily News announced Wednesday night it is endorsing Ohio Gov. John Kasich in the Republican race for president.
Thursday's edition of the newspaper will carry the front-page headline, "Never Trump." Below that is a line that reads "(Never Cruz, Either)."
The Daily News' editorial board slams Donald Trump, a New Yorker and the leading candidate in the GOP race, and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. The paper urges the nearly 3 million registered Republicans in New York to vote for Kasich in the state's primary on April 19.
"Kasich's qualifications are all the clearer — screamingly so — when matched against those of competitors Donald Trump and Ted Cruz," the editorial board writes.
"In fact, both men would be disastrous as President — Cruz because he is an absolutist ideologue, Trump because he suffers from the irreparable, disqualifying defect of being Trump."
Trump leads the delegate count with 743, followed by Cruz (545) and Kasich (143). Kasich has vowed to stay in the race in hopes that he is the last candidate standing at this summer's Republican National Convention in Cleveland.
Kasich has served at many levels of government, including the Ohio State Senate and the U.S. House. He became Ohio's governor in 2011.
According to Real Clear Politics, Trump has a strong lead in New York polls ahead of the primary. The website calculates his average at 53.8 percent, followed by Kasich (21.9) and Cruz (17.9).
Barron's recently chose Kasich as the GOP's best hope to beat Democrat Hillary Clinton if both win their parties' nominations.
Retired four-star Gen. Michael Hayden, who also served as the director of the National Security Agency and the CIA, endorsed Kasich for president last week.
